The rising tide
The overcast sky darkens as the first gust of wind picks up from the north. The tide now covers the lowest stones of the shrine.
Kevin and Jenny walked from the shrine to the dock in the rising storm, where Kevin inspected the south piling and mooring ring under load while Jenny leaned on him. The shim under the north piling held firm, but the south piling showed fresh movement at the base and the mooring ring mortise had splintered further under the strain. They then made their way up to the cottage as the rain intensified.
Time to move. Storm's building faster than the glass said.

I know. Check the south piling one last time when we get.
Limp toward the cottage, clutching the notebook to my chest to keep the sketches from the spray.

South piling first. Then you sit, ankle up. I'll run the generator if the wind dies enough.

Just check the shim. It looks deep.
Lean heavily on Kevin as we reach the dock, watching the water swirl around the wood.
