the keeper's cottage · day 557 · evening

The storm breaks

By evening, the flat sky has collapsed into a torrential downpour. You are trapped together inside the cottage, the light of the lantern flickering as the wind lashes against the roof.

The rain has shifted from a steady drizzle to a rhythmic drumming on the cottage roof. Inside, the air is heavy with the smell of damp earth and drying mint. The first bucket under the leak is filling faster than expected as the wind drives the spray sideways, while the barometer continues to drop, signaling a deepening of the front.

🌿 Jenny21:36

We should move the radio further from the wall. If the leak in the shutter gets worse, the spray will hit the shelf.

Limp toward the radio and carefully shift it six inches to the right.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is plummeting. If the water weight shifts the frame, the shutters might actually hold, but I can't stop thinking about that hole behind the barrels.

🔧 Kevin21:36

Mm. Coax run's got slack?

Watch her settle the radio, then check the shutter leak over the sink — bucket catching it, water level rising.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the spray. The shutter leak's been getting worse all afternoon. She moved without asking me to help — good, her ankle's holding.

🌿 Jenny21:38

There's enough slack. Just keep an eye on the bucket.

Sink back onto the stool and tighten the clean cloth wrap around my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focusing on the hardware because he doesn't know how to talk to me while I'm bleeding and shaking. I can't even look at him without thinking about the seeds.

🔧 Kevin21:38

Bucket's filling. Might need the second one before morning.

Pull the second galvanized bucket from under the stove, set it ready beside the first.

💭 peek at the thought
She's managing the ankle herself now. Stopped asking me to re-wrap it two days ago. The bucket's half-full already — shutter frame's rotted worse than I thought.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:40

Thanks.

Reach for the thermometer and press it under my tongue, eyes fixed on the flickering lantern.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being so practical. It's infuriating. I can feel the infection pulsing in my leg, and all he can think about is the volume of the leak.

🔧 Kevin21:40

(hold still, wait for the beep)

Keep mouth closed around the thermometer, glance at the barometer on the shelf — needle hasn't moved in an hour.

💭 peek at the thought
Still checking. Fever broke two days ago but she doesn't trust it. The lantern throws her face in shadow — tired lines around her eyes.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:42

It's holding. For now.

Remove the thermometer and check the reading, then set it carefully on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
It's plateaued. 985. If it stays here, we're just in for a long night of rain, but if it dips again, the cottage is going to groan.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin21:42

Radio check at eighteen hundred. Coast Guard might have something.

Reach for the tin mugs on the shelf, pour the last of the coffee from the pot into both. Slide one across the table to her.

💭 peek at the thought
Holding. Good. She sets it down like it's something fragile. The wind gusts, shutters rattling in their frames. Barometer steady at 985 — maybe the front's stalled.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:44

I'll be ready.

Wrap both hands around the warm mug, letting the heat sink into my palms.

💭 peek at the thought
If the Coast Guard doesn't answer, I'm just stuck on this rock with a rotting ankle and a tin of seeds I never planted.

🔧 Kevin21:44

Storm anchor's set. Dinghy's rode out worse.

Wrap hands around my own mug, let the warmth spread through fingers gone stiff from the pantry damp. Listen to the rain hammer the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
She's cold still. The infection took more out of her than she admits. Coffee steam curls between us — first time in weeks we've just sat without working at something.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:46

Good. We need to check the hull in the morning.

Take a slow sip of the coffee, watching the shadows dance on the whitewashed stone.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the dinghy is held. If that goes, I'm truly stranded here when the next storm hits.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:46

Low tide's 0640. Light enough by six.

Take a sip, taste the bitterness, set the mug down. Reach into my pocket, fingers brushing the folded letter to Tom — still there, still unsent. Pull my hand out empty.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead. Hull, dock, garden, radio — always the next thing. The way she says "we." Not "you." The lantern flame jumps as a gust finds a crack in the porch door.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:48

I'll try to get some sleep.

Lean back against the stool, wincing as the ankle throbs against the brace.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always got the schedule. He doesn't see the way the infection is turning the skin around the bone.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:48

Take the bed. I'll sit the radio until the check.

Stand, mug in hand, and move to the radio shelf. Switch the shortwave on, let the static fill the room. Turn the gain down low so it won't wake her if she does drop off.

💭 peek at the thought
She won't sleep. Not with the wind like this. She'll lie there listening to every creak of the dock, every rattle of the shutters. The brace chafes — I saw the raw skin when I changed the wrap yesterday.
