Rising Tide and Falling Pressure
The tide now reaches the mid-wale of the dinghy. The grey clouds are darkening, and the wind is beginning to pick up from the north.
The air is heavy and humid as the barometer continues its descent to 989 hPa, signaling a storm approaching faster than anticipated. The tide is rising rapidly, lapping at the lower stones of the shrine and making the dock planks slick with algae. Kevin and Jenny work quickly to secure the gear and the dinghy before the rising water completely swallows the workspace.
Kevin, the tide is coming in fast. Help me secure the lines.
Tuck the seed packets into the dry-box and move them inside the cottage.

Right behind you. South piling first — want eyes on that mortise before it's under. Then dinghy springs.
Walk to the south piling at the dock edge, crowbar in hand, and lever the mooring ring up to inspect the mortise splintering at current water level.

Watch where you put that bar, the rot is deep in the grain there.
Limp to the edge of the dock and check the tension on the dinghy's bow line.

Wedges are holding. Mortise walls are gone past the surface. Proper sister needs low tide and greenheart. For now —
Drive the crowbar tip into the mortise gap to test depth of rot, then call out measurements: "Rot penetrates three inches back from the face. Wedges biting on sound oak at the bottom.

It's a holding pattern only. We need to double-up that line before the wind shifts higher.
Sketch the rot pattern on the Analysisise in the notebook for the repair plan.

Spare warp in the crate. Stern cleat to north piling and back — second spring. You sketch, I'll rig.
Retrieve the spare half-inch three-strand from the crate, pay out to the dinghy stern cleat, lead it around the base of the north piling, and secure it back to the cleat with a round turn and two half hitches, taking up slack until both spr

Make sure the knot is tight. I don't want it slipping when the surge hits.
Sketch the internal cross-section of the mortise, noting exactly where the wood is still solid.

Set. Warp's biting. Dinghy's riding on two springs now. Bow line's slack — she's held by the stern.
Step back, wipe hands on trousers, and glance at the barometer lashed to the dock post: "986. Dropping three in twenty minutes."
