The Squall Arrives

The wind howls through the eaves as the leak in the shutter widens. The cottage feels small as the storm breaks in earnest.

The heavy humid air hangs over the cottage as the tide begins its slow rise inland. Jenny rests her swollen ankle while Kevin checks the equipment preparations for the supply boat's arrival in five days.

Shutter's blowing. Going to secure it.

Grab the spare tarp and timber strips from the porch, move to the windward shutter, batten it down hard with the strips and heavy nails.

💭 peek at the thought
The shutter's giving way. Wind's finding every gap. Need to batten it proper before the glass goes.

Be careful! Don't let the wind catch the tarp!

Lean back against the wall, clutching the antibiotic blister pack, and watch him through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is screaming. If that shutter gives, the whole kitchen is a wind tunnel. I can't even stand up to help him without my ankle screaming back.

Working the lee. Won't let it billow.

Move to the sheltered side of the shutter, feed the tarp edge under the existing batten first, then drive the timber strips home with the heavy hammer, keeping the canvas drum-tight against the frame.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Wind catches tarp, it becomes a sail. Need to work leeward side, keep it tight.

🌿 Jenny23:50

Jenny — take one metronidazole tablet with a swallow of water from the tin mug.

💭 peek at the thought
He's doing it right. Tight enough to keep the rain out, but not so tight it rips the screws from the wood. Now I just need to get this medicine in me before I start shaking.
