← Day 56

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the tide pools

Afternoon work and the weight of waiting

Kevin is at the dock testing the dinghy engine mount bolts under load; Jenny is at the tide pools checking the water tank for leaks.

Kevin tightened the final engine mount bolt and called the supply boat on the shortwave, but heard only a news broadcast and static. Jenny checked the water tank seam and found no leaks, then tried to sketch sea beet at the tide pools but the rising water forced her to abandon the work.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You are alone at the dock, the dinghy’s engine mount bolts under your wrench as you apply steady pressure to test their hold. The air is still and thick, the barometer holding at 976 hPa.

🔧 Kevin04:49

Kevin — tighten the last engine mount bolt to final torque, wipe hands on rag, step back and inspect the alignment of the mount brackets relative to the transom

💭 peek at the thought
Bolts feel solid. Timber's sound. The mount'll hold the engine weight, but the vibration at idle is another question. Need the engine on it to know.

🔧 Kevin04:52

Kevin — walk back to the cottage, climb the porch steps, pick up the shortwave handset from the table

💭 peek at the thought
Mount's done. Best I can do without the engine on it. Radio check's next — supply boat was due four days ago. Barometer holding steady but the air feels wrong. Heavy. Like before the Biscay storm.

🔧 Kevin04:56

Sorrel Island calling supply vessel. Over.

key the mic, wait, release, listen to the hiss

💭 peek at the thought
Static mostly. Faint voice on the scheduled frequency but too weak to copy. Could be the supply boat, could be a trawler fifty miles out. Aerial insulator's cracked further — signal's bleeding. Need to tape it proper or lose contact entirely.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the tide pools

You are alone at the tide pools, having left the cottage to walk the shore toward the spring-fed tank, your eyes scanning its wooden bands for any sign of weeping or swell. The tide is low, the rocks slick, and the air hangs heavy and grey.

🌿 Jenny04:51

Jenny — kneels by the water tank and runs a palm over the lower seam, checking for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping again. If that storm hits before the boat comes, we're going to be rationing water by hand.

🌿 Jenny04:55

Jenny — wipes damp hands on trousers and pulls the notebook from her pocket, looking at the sea beet growth near the tide line.

💭 peek at the thought
382 litres. If I lose even ten to a leak, the math for next month gets ugly.

🌿 Jenny04:59

Stay on the shelf, you stubborn things.

Opens the notebook to a clean page and begins sketching the morphology of the sea beet leaves with precise lines.

💭 peek at the thought
These salt glands are prominent today. They're working overtime just to survive the heat.
