The Heavy Air

Kevin inspects the Yanmar's prop shaft while the humid air hangs motionless over the water. Jenny sits on the weathered planks, checking the barometer as the pressure continues to drop.

Kevin tested the aft cleat and found its bolts solid in sound timber. Jenny retrieved the half-inch three-strand rope from the locker and they rigged a second warp from the dinghy's bow to the aft cleat, sharing the load with the compromised mooring ring. The double line held firm when they tensioned it by hand.

🌿 Jenny04:23

The pressure is dropping, Kevin. We need to secure the dinghy before the wind shifts.

Closes the notebook and stands up, wiping grit from her palms.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is falling too fast for a normal morning; if that storm hits before the boat comes, the garden will be washed out anyway.

🔧 Kevin04:23

Aye. Grab the spare warp from the locker — half-inch three-strand we found in the crate. I'll check the ring bolts.

crouch at the dock edge, wrench in hand, testing the mooring ring bolts for play

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer's been falling all morning. 978 and dropping means wind before noon. The dinghy's only tied with a single bowline to that loose mooring ring — if the swell picks up it'll work the mortise right out. Need to double up the lines and check the ring bolts while I'm down here.

🌿 Jenny04:25

I'll get the warp. Check the wood around the bolts too.

Walks toward the way locker to retrieve the half-inch three-strand rope.

💭 peek at the thought
If those bolts are loose, the dinghy goes out to sea the first time the tide surges.

🔧 Kevin04:25

Kevin — probe the mortar around the ring bolts with the tip of a screwdriver, feeling for soft spots while the wrench rests on the nearest nut

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's thinking ahead — the mortar around those bolts has been crumbling since winter. If the ring pulls, it takes the plank with it. Need to see if the backing plate's still holding or if we're just hanging on rust.

🌿 Jenny04:27

Is the wood holding up there? We might need to double-up the line.

Reaches into the locker, searching for the coil of warp.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood looks soft. If that bolt pulls through, the whole thing won't hold.

🔧 Kevin04:27

Bolts are good. Wood's not. Backing plate shifts. We'll run a second warp to the aft cleat, share the strain.

tap the ring bolt with the wrench handle, watching the mortar crack further, then stand and wipe grit from palms

💭 peek at the thought
Mortar's powder. The backing plate's moving — maybe an eighth inch when I lever it. The bolts themselves are sound stainless, but they're only as good as the wood they're buried in. If we double the line to the cleat aft as well, we spread the load. Need to tell her.

🌿 Jenny04:29

Double-up it is. I'll get the warp.

Steps into the locker to find the half-inch three-strand rope.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wood is rotting, a single bolt won't matter when the gale hits.

🔧 Kevin04:29

Kevin — walk the dock to the aft cleat, crouch and test its bolts with the wrench

💭 peek at the thought
She's already moving. Good. The locker's damp — rope'll be stiff with salt. Need to work it loose before we try to tie anything off. Meanwhile I should check the aft cleat's fastenings too. No point doubling to a cleat that pulls out.
