Preparing for the rain

You and Jenny return to the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain fall. The wind picks up, rattling the corrugated roof.

The heavy rain lulls into a steady rhythmic drumming against the cottage roof. Inside, the smell of damp wood and drying sea beet fills the air as the lathe hums with a high-pitched whine. The tide is receding, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools, but the storm remains close enough to keep anyone keeping a watch on the clouds.

walk to the cottage porch and secure the plastic tarp over the generator and seed tin, then check the shortwave aerial tension at the mast base

Storm's here proper now. Need to check the radio aerial one more time before the wind tears it down, and get the generator covered. Stomach's still turning but the rain's a good excuse to stay inside and work the lathe on that bronze sleeve.

Kitchen it is. Light from the stove, and I can keep an ear on the radio while I work. The limpets'll dry quick on that cast iron. Need to get the lathe set up on the table and find the bronze stock.

Bronze stock in the crate?

open the wooden crate by the doorway and dig through for the bronze bar stock, then measure the prop shaft diameter again with the micrometer to confirm the cut

Good. She's got the radio loud. Now I need the bronze bar stock — should be in the crate by the door. Cut a slug, face it, bore the ID to shaft size minus two thou, then the OD to bearing size plus two thou. Press fit with locktite. Simple if the lathe holds true.

pull the prop shaft from the rack by the door, measure the shaft OD at the bearing journal with the micrometer, then measure the cutless bearing ID, and write both numbers in the notebook

There it is. Good — she thought ahead. Now I need to mic the shaft one more time, then the bearing bore. Can't afford a mistake on the interference fit. Two thou on a metric-to-imperial conversion leaves no margin.
