A Quiet Stretch
Back at the cottage.
The air in the cottage is heavy with the smell of damp salt and woodsmoke. The kettle begins to hiss on the stove, a sharp metallic sound that cuts through the low rumble of the approaching surf. Jenny winces as she shifts her weight, the salt water in the bucket providing a momentary, stinging relief to the deep throbbing pulse in her ankle.

Strong it is. Two sugars, right?
set the kettle on the stove, measure tea into the pot, and watch the steam climb while the water comes up

Just one. And don't forget the radio check.
at the table, pick up the pencil, and begin shading the veins on the dried sea beet leaf specimen.

pour the steeped tea into two tin mugs, drop one sugar cube in hers, none in mine, and set hers on the table beside the notebook without spilling

Just make sure you mention the pressure is dropping. I need those supplies if the storm keeps us in.
reach for the mug, wrap both hands around the warmth, and take a slow, cautious sip while staring at the throbbing ankle.
