Evening at the Ridge

The tide is beginning to recede, leaving the air heavy with humidity. Kevin and Jenny walk together up to the ridge to examine the shrine as the sun sets.

The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the reef. The air is heavy with the humidity of an approaching storm, and the pressure continues to drop as the evening light fades over the old shrine's lichen-covered stones.

🌿 Jenny04:40

The stones are losing their faces every year. The salt is eating them.

Jenny leans heavily on her walking stick, pulling her way from her pocket to trace the weathered patterns on the stone marked 'E'.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is thbbing with every step, but the view from the ridge is worth the pain; I need to document the names on these stones before the light fails completely.

Salt wins in the end. Always does.

Walk to the stone marked 'E', run fingertips over the carved letter where her hand just was, then scan the ridge for the second crate's position against the darkening water.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt takes everything given enough time. Engines, hulls, names on stone. She's right about the stones, and she's right about the crate — we should've gotten it yesterday. Now the tide's turning against us again.

way if I record how they look now first.

Jenny opens her notebook and begins a quick, precise sketch of the lichen growth on the stone with 'E'.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks everything is a losing battle against decay, but he hasn't seen the way the lichen clings to the north.

Good. The trust'll want records. So will whoever comes after.

Crouch beside her, keeping weight off my knees, and scan the stone circle for fresh damage — new cracks, shifted stones, anything the last blow might've moved.

💭 peek at the thought
She's recording what's disappearing. Smart. Methodical. The way she used to be with the garden plans before the storm took the words out of her. The sketchbook's dry pages won't last forever either, but nothing does.

🌿 Jenny04:44

I'm not planning on leaving a mess, Kevin.

Jenny pauses her sketch, looking up at the darkening sky and checking the barometer in her mind.

💭 peek at the thought
way comes after will just find a mess and a half-finished garden if I don't finish this.

🔧 Kevin04:46

Didn't say you were.

Stand, joints popping, and turn toward the cliff edge where the second crate sits wedged — check if the falling tide's exposed enough of the rocks to reach it before dark.

💭 peek at the thought
A mess. That's what she thinks this is. What I think this is. Two people and a cottage and a radio that barely reaches the mainland and a garden half weeds and a crate of hooks we nearly drowned for. She's not wrong.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:48

way be careful. The light is going fast.

Jenny closes her notebook with a sharp snap and shifts her weight, wincing as the throb in her ankle flares.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so cynical about the end of things while I'm just trying to make the middle count.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:49

I'll take the crowbar. You stay here.

Turn back toward the cottage to fetch the crowbar and headlamp, moving slow enough to give her room to argue if she wants to.

💭 peek at the thought
Light's going. Tide's dropping. Ankle's flaring. She's right on all three. The crate's been in the salt two tides now — hooks'll be rusting, jar seal failing. But the rocks are slick and the path down is loose shale. One wrong step and we're both casualties.
