A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin redressed Jenny's ankle wound, irrigating it with warm salt water and applying a fresh sea beet-mint poultice before marking the infection's edge two fingers below the knee — one finger improved from yesterday. He then checked the generator fuel and radio aerial lashing while Jenny took her remaining antibiotics.

🔧 Kevin04:10

Kevin — walk into the kitchen, set the crowbar by the door, and go to the bedroom to check Jenny's ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Back at the cottage. Rain steady on the roof. Need to check Jenny's ankle — red line was past the tape last night. Then secure the generator and radio before the wind picks up. Low tide soon for the second crate.

🌿 Jenny04:10

Don't pull the bandage too fast, Kevin. It's throbbing.

Sit up on the edge of the bed, watching him work while clutching my good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too loudly today. The floorboards are groaning under his boots.

🔧 Kevin04:12

Not pulling anything fast. Talk me through it — where's the heat worst?

Sit on the edge of the bed beside her, unwrap the outer bandage carefully, keeping the inner gauze moist with saline from the basin.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been holding that leg stiff all night. The throbbing means the infection's still tracking. I'll work slow, keep the gauze damp so it doesn't stick to the wound edges.

🌿 Jenny04:13

Lower down, near the tendon. It feels like it's burning from the inside.

Point to the red area near the ankle bone, wincing as the air hits the wound.

💭 peek at the thought
It's right along the bone, where I can feel the pulse thumping against the skin.

🔧 Kevin04:14

Antibiotics are hitting it. The line's back from your shin. But the tendon's angry. I'll flush it, pack it fresh, and we'll mark the edge again.

Draw warm salt water into the syringe, gently irrigate the wound along the tendon track, then apply fresh sea beet-mint poultice and re-wrap with clean gauze. Mark the red line's current edge with pen.

💭 peek at the thought
Tendon sheath involvement. That's deeper than yesterday. The red line's faded some at the top margin — antibiotics working — but the heat at the tendon means we're not clear. Need to flush it clean, re-pack with the sea beet-mint poultice, and watch the line marks.

🌿 Jenny04:15

Just mark it. I need to know how much I'm losing every morning.

Lean back against the pillows, watching his hand move the pen across my skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If that line moves toward my knee, I won't be able to walk to the ridge.

🔧 Kevin04:16

Edge is two fingers below the knee. Yesterday it was three. You're holding.

Cap the pen, set it on the bedside table. Secure the final wrap, tuck the end. Reach for the antibiotic blister pack — two doxycycline left, five metronidazole. Hand her the mug of water from the nightstand.

💭 peek at the thought
She measures the bad days in pen marks on skin. I measure them in barometer drops and rope wear. Different ledgers, same storm.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:17

I'm not holding, I'm just waiting for the tide.

Take the pills, swallow with a grimace, and look at the rain on the window.

💭 peek at the thought
Two fingers. That's an inch of ground, but the infection is still hungry.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin04:18

Tide's turning. Barometer's steady at 976. Wind's still SW. We've got hours before it backs hard.

Set the empty mug down. Pull the blanket up over her foot. Stand, wipe hands on the rag. Head to the kitchen to check the generator fuel and the radio aerial lashing.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide turns. She knows it. I know it. The difference is she says it out loud.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny04:19

Make sure the shelter's secure. I want to sleep without hearing the wind. Make sure the shelter's secure. I want to sleep without hearing the wind.

Sit up slowly, testing my weight on the good leg, then push myself fully upright. </think>THOUGHT: The generator's been running clean, but that aerial's still hanging by a thread. Sit up slowly, testing my weight on the good leg, then push
