The Calm Before the Squall

The wind begins to pick up, whistling through the gaps in the cottage shutters. They must secure the water tank and the garden before the first rain hits.

Kevin re-lashed the listing dock piling at low tide using the come-along and heavy weather line, securing it against the rising squall. Jenny changed her ankle dressing, marked the infection line, then hiked to the north cliffs to sketch sea beet salt gland morphology and monitor the barometer.

🌿 Jenny05:07

Kevin, get the tarp and the twine now! The wind is turning harder than expected!

stand up slowly, wincing as my ankle shifts, and limp toward the shed to grab the heavy canvas.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if that tank isn't lashed down, the whole water supply will be lost in the runoff.

Tank straps first. You sit. I'll get the tarp.

Walk to the back wall of the cottage, check the 400-litre rain tank straps and ratchet them down tight, then grab the heavy-duty tarp and twine from the porch shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving on a leg that held pus three days ago. The wind's already westing — barometer at 975 and rising slow, but the gusts taste like more rain coming. Tank straps first, then garden. She shouldn't be hauling canvas.

🌿 Jenny05:08

I'm not just sitting there! Help me secure the garden before the soil washes out!

grab the roll of twine and start moving toward the half-weeded garden bed.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always the one with the heavy lifting, but I'm the one who has to watch the seeds.

🔧 Kevin05:10

Tank takes two minutes. Garden takes twenty. I'll do tank, you stake cloth. Don't carry the roll — unroll it in place.

Ratchet the tank straps down hard against the back wall, check the overflow pipe clear, then walk to the garden with the tarp and meet her there.

💭 peek at the thought
Stubborn as the Yanmar's old governor. She'll tear the wound open hauling wet canvas on a gimpy ankle. But the garden's on a slope — one good downpour and the heirloom rows go straight to the sea. Both need doing. Split the work.

🌿 Jenny05:10

way. way make sure the tension is right; the wind will rip the stakes right out.

crouch in the damp dirt, gritting through the pain, and begin laying the heavy canvas over the seedling rows.

💭 peek at the thought
combination thinks I'm useless own of the leg, but I'm the one who knows what this soil needs.

🔧 Kevin05:12

Mid-stakes won't hold. I'll batten the edges with timber strips. You tie off the corners tight and stay off the knee.

Grab the two-by-four offcuts from the porch pile, run them the length of each tarp edge, and screw them down through the canvas into the stakes while she works the corner lines.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — wind gets under loose cloth and peels it like a banana. Oak stakes are in at the corners but the mid-points are just tent pegs. Need timber strips battened over the edges, not just twine. And she shouldn't be crouching on that ankle.

🌿 Jenny05:12

I'm tying as fast as I can! The wind is already catching the edge!

pull the twine through the eyelet, my fingers shaking from the cold, and knot it double around the spruce stake.

💭 peek at the thought
if these knots don't hold, my grandmother's seeds will be buried in the mud by morning.

🔧 Kevin05:14

Hold the corner tension. I'll drive the stake and batten this side.

Kick the spruce stake deeper with my boot, lay the two-by-four batten over the tarp edge, and drive three-inch screws through batten, canvas, and into the stake — then run the next batten strip along the windward edge.

💭 peek at the thought
Canvas is billowing hard now — gusts hitting 35, maybe 40. She's tying with cold fingers, ankle swollen inside the wrap, and the stake she's using is the one I drove shallow yesterday. If it pulls, the whole windward side goes. Need to get the batten strips on *now*, and drive that stake deeper while I'm at it.
