Morning Humidity and Rising Pressure
The heavy air sits over the island as the grey sky thickens before noon. Jenny sits on a low chair, her ankle elevated in a basin of warm salt water while Kevin checks the barometer needle.
Kevin checked the barometer and seed tin, finding the paper packets dry but the tin still damp with minor mold. Jenny changed her ankle dressing with fresh sea beet poultice and noted the red line holding. A rat was heard scratching in the pantry.
Pressure's up. Wind'll ease by afternoon.
check the barometer reading again, then walk to the porch rail and scan the horizon for any sign of the supply boat

Good. I'd like to be able to stand without feeling like my bone is melting.
Gently lift the ankle out of the salt water and reach for the clean gauze.

Red line holding?
step back and let her work, turning toward the radio shelf to check the aerial lead where it enters the cottage

It's holding for now, but I need to check the tin before the tide turns.
Apply the poultice to the infection and wrap it loosely with the fresh gauze.

Tin's under the tarp on the porch. Paper packets are drying on the newspaper.
walk to the porch and pull back the tarp corner to check the seed tin's condition, glancing at the packets spread on newspaper

Check the edges of the paper. If they feel damp, we have to move them inside.
Lean back against the pillow, wincing as the movement throbs in my ankle.
