Night watch at the radio
The rain falls steady on the cottage roof. Kevin sits at the table with the shortwave handset in his lap, the dial glow painting his face green. Jenny is curled in the chair beside the stove, notebook closed, eyes on the window where the dark presses against the glass. The generator runs on. Somewhere out in the black the supply boat is either coming or it isn't.
The air is heavy and still as the pressure continues its slow retreat. Kevin lingers by the radio, tracing the crack in the insulator but refusing to key the transmitter yet, while Jenny focuses on the notebook, her pencil sketching the intricate patterns of the lichen she found on the rocks.

The barometer is dropping again, Kevin. Don't bother.
reaches for the seed tin and traces the cold metal rim with a thumb.

Didn't say I was calling the boat.
set the handset back in the cradle without keying it, reach for the tin mug of cold coffee on the table

Good. The sea much needs more time on the stove anyway.
opens the notebook to the blank page for the lichen sketch and begins to sharpen the pencil again.

We've got time.
sip the cold coffee, wince at the taste, set the mug down hard enough to ring

Not with the way sitting where it is.
leans forward, pressing the pencil lead to the paper to start the first rough outline of the lichen-crust.
