A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The rain continues its steady, rhythmic drumming against the cottage roof, filling the air heavy with the scent of wet earth and salt. Inside, the kettle begins to hiss on the wood stove, sending a thin curl of steam to meet the damp chill. The water tank is nearing its limit, with the overflow pipe beginning to trickle onto the already-saturated ground around the foundation.

🔧 Kevin10:31

Tea?

walk to the stove, fill kettle from tank tap, set it on the wood stove

💭 peek at the thought
Back on dry ground. The crate's weight still in my shoulders. Jenny's quiet behind me — ankle, or something else. Tank's full, barometer rising. Night comes early here.

🌿 Jenny10:31

Please. With a bit of honey, if there's any left.

Sit heavily in the kitchen chair and lean back to elevate the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
I can smell the rain on the stones. My ankle is humming, but the hunger is worse.

🔧 Kevin10:33

Half a jar left. Ants haven't got to it yet.

take down the honey jar, spoon two dollops into each tin mug, pour hot water over them, stir with the same spoon, set one mug on the table in front of Jenny and keep the other

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it more than she let on at the dock. Honey jar's on the shelf — half full if the ants haven't found it.

🌿 Jenny10:33

Thanks.

Wrap both hands around the warm mug and let the heat sink into my palms.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being quiet today. Maybe it's the rain, maybe it's me.

🔧 Kevin10:35

Ankle still hot?

sit opposite her, blow across my own mug, watch her face

💭 peek at the thought
Steam rising. Her fingers white-knuckled on the mug. The ankle's throbbing — I can see it in the tendons of her forearm. Should've made her stay off it entirely today.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:35

A bit. But the redness is receding.

Take a slow sip of the tea and look away toward the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's watching me. He knows it's not just the heat of the infection.

🔧 Kevin10:37

Boat's due Thursday. Sea state looks like it'll hold.

sip tea, set mug down, pull the notebook from my pocket and open to the sea beet sketches

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the weather through the glass. Barometer rising, sky clearing west. Supply boat in four days if it comes. She's calculating something — stores, days, the letter from the trust still folded in her pocket.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:37

I hope so. The rain is getting heavier now.

Trace the edge of a leaf sketch in the notebook with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat comes, I can get more antibiotics. I can't risk another week.

🔧 Kevin10:39

Roof holds. Tank's full.

watch her finger on the sketch, wait

💭 peek at the thought
Rain on the roof. Heavy now. She's tracing the salt gland illustrations — the ones from the northern shelf at low tide. Her thumb catches on the page edge. The trust letter burns a hole in her pocket. I know it does.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:39

That's one thing.

Close the notebook and look down at the dull throb in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the water is sorted. I'm still starving for limpets.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:41

It's getting better.

get up, walk across the porch to the dock, inspect the mooring lines and the dock itself, then return here.

💭 peek at the thought
The ankle's still sore, but the redness has faded. Rain keeps falling, the barometer keeps climbing. The dock lines are holding, but I should verify before the tide shifts.

🌿 Jenny10:42

I'm trying.

Reach for the mug and take the last of the tea.

💭 peek at the thought
He wants me to believe it as much as I need him to.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:43

Lines are tight. Shackle's holding.

step back inside, close the door against the wet, pull the cedar wedge from my pocket and set it on the table — the one from the porch hinge mortise

💭 peek at the thought
She's trying. At the ankle, at the waiting, at not saying the thing about the letter. Rain hammers the porch roof. I'm at the door, one hand on the frame, looking out at the dock lines disappearing into grey water.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:43

Good.

Look at the cedar wedge, then back at my swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always fixing the island while I'm just trying to stay whole.
