the keeper's cottage · day 571 · midday

midday meal and crate recovery plan

Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table with tinned corned beef and limpet broth. The tide is turning toward ebb. They discuss whether to attempt the waterlogged crate recovery at the dock now or wait for lower water, and whether to dig the foundation drainage trench this afternoon.

A sudden squall hit the cottage with driving rain and gusting wind. Kevin stayed on the porch watching the tide drop while Jenny took ibuprofen and worked on her sea beet sketches at the table. The crate remained secured alongside the dock ladder, and the barometer held steady at 992 hPa despite the weather.

🌿 Jenny11:15

Wait for the tide to drop another meter first. I'm not walking on the pilings today, and the trench can wait until the swelling goes down.

Props her ankle on the chair and reaches for her own to ignore the pain.

💭 peek at the thought
If we don't get that crate now, the salt will ruin the seeds inside, but I can't damn stand up to help him with the rope.

🔧 Kevin11:17

Tide drops another meter in forty minutes. Crate won't move. Trench can wait till tomorrow — ground's too wet today anyway.

eat another spoonful of corned beef and broth, watching the barometer needle hold steady at 992

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the pilings — slick as hell at this tide and my knee won't hold a slip. But the foundation seep's been weeping since the last spring tide. Another day won't collapse the corner, but it won't fix itself either.

🌿 Jenny11:17

Good. I'll finish the sea beet sketches while we wait, if I can stop pulsing.

Picks up the pencil and starts sketching the salt glands on the leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's right about the mud; the island would be soup if I tried to dig now.

🔧 Kevin11:19

Take the ibuprofen from the kit. Top shelf, blue bottle.

push back from the table and stand slowly, weight on the left leg, limping toward the porch door to check the tide line at the dock ladder

💭 peek at the thought
She draws to keep the pain from taking the whole chair. Seen her do it before — burns, the ankle, that cut on her forearm from the crate strap. Pencil moves, breath steadies.

🌿 Jenny11:19

Thanks.

Reaches for the first aid kit and the blue bottle, wincing as she shifts her weight.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope it kills the throbbing enough so I can actually see the paper.

🔧 Kevin11:21

Kevin — step onto the porch, brace a hand on the doorframe, and scan the dock — water level against the pilings, the crate's position, the warp tension

💭 peek at the thought
She hates asking. Hates needing. I'll check the ladder rungs while I'm out there — see if the crate's shifted on the lines.

🌿 Jenny11:21

It's getting low enough. Don't go out there alone, though.

Swallows the pills with a gulp of water, then leans back, trying to focus on the intricate veins of the sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is pulling out fast, but that crate is still wedged deep in the silt.

🔧 Kevin11:23

Not going out. Just looking. Forty minutes and the ladder rungs'll be clear.

lean against the porch post, arms crossed, watching the water fall against the barnacle line on the south piling

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The pilings are still slick halfway up. One wrong step and I'm down again, knee or no knee. But the crate's secured, warp's holding, tide's dropping clean. Nothing urgent out there.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:23

way minutes. I'll have the morphology done then.

Presses the pencil to the paper, detailing the way structure of the salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in three days, I'm in trouble.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:25

Mm.

shift weight off the bad knee, pull a cigarette from the tin in my pocket, light it with the zippo, and exhale into the warm rain

💭 peek at the thought
Forty minutes. She'll have the glands mapped down to the cellular level by then. Me, I'll just stand here and watch the tide do its work — same as always.
