Morning routines and foundation work

Kevin stands at the porch rail scanning the grey water while Jenny sits propped against the doorframe, ankle elevated on a folded tarp, a pot of salt water steaming beside her. The barometer reads 990 and rising, the tide fully out — low enough to expose the northeast foundation corner where lime joint cured overnight. He has his crowbar and pointing trowel ready; she has the scalpel soaking in the hot water and the seed tin cracked open on her lap, mold-spotted packets already separated.

Kevin works on the northeast foundation of the cottage, applying final mortar points to the cured lime joint while the tide is out. Jenny sits inside, propping her ankle and checking the heirloom seed tin for mold as the fever sets in. The air is heavy and the pressure is beginning to rise.

🔧 Kevin17:01

Tide’s dead low. I’m gonna hit the northeast corner while it’s exposed. You good there with the tin?

walk to the northeast foundation corner with crowbar and pointing trowel, kneel to inspect the cured lime joint

💭 peek at the thought
The air’s still, but the barometer’s climbing — good sign. Jenny’s quiet, working on the seed tin like it’s something she can control. I’ll get the foundation pointed before the tide turns, then check if she needs the scalpel cleaned or the poultice refreshed. No need to ask — she’ll say if she wants help.

I'm fine. Just watch the shift in the joint, the lime is still tacky.

way picks the scalpel from the water and carefully wraps the sea beet seeds in a dry square of paper.

💭 peek at the thought
He's checking the stone, and I'm checking the seeds. I can't lose my grandmother's legacy.

🔧 Kevin17:03

Aye. Light hand.

tap the cured lime joint gently with the pointing trowel to test firmness, then begin final pointing with slow, even strokes

💭 peek at the thought
She’s sharp, watching the work even while her hands are busy. Lime’s not fully set — she’s right. I’ll tap it gentle, not force it.

🌿 Jenny17:06

Good. I'll check the spring in a bit, see if I can get some de-salting done.

Jenny shifts in her chair, propping her ankle higher, and carefully opens the seed tin to check the packets again.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is holding, the lime is holding, but my ankle is burning and the seeds are waiting.

🔧 Kevin17:07

Take your time. I’ll be done here in twenty.

continue pointing the northeast foundation joint, working methodically along the exposed course

💭 peek at the thought
She’s moving careful, not pushing the ankle. Spring’s a good walk for her — I’ll keep an eye on the time, make sure she’s back before the tide fills the pools. The seed tin’s her focus now. I’ll finish here and meet her halfway if she’s slow.

🌿 Jenny17:11

Thanks. I'll try to get moving once the water cools down.

Jenny picks up a handful of sea beet seeds from the tin, inspecting them for any further signs of dampness.

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes. Just enough to get the soak right before the fever starts to climb again.
