A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The air in the cottage is stifling, smelling of damp wood and the sharp metallic tang of the infection. Jenny sits on the edge of the cot, her face pale with sweat as she watches Kevin lay out the first aid kit on the small table. He carefully clears the tarp from the seed tin, revealing the condensation trapped inside, while the leak from the shutter continues to rhythm drip onto the floorboards.

🌿 Jenny18:36

Kevin, the ankle needs another dressing. And I need you to check something for me - look at these seed packets.

stand slowly, gripping the edge of the cot, then shuffle toward the small table where the seed tin sits under the tarp

💭 peek at the thought
The infection feels like it's burning deeper even as the fever breaks. I need to keep the poultice clean but I'm too weak to stand for long. Those seeds in the tin... they're my future, but they're also just seeds if I can't survive this long enough to plant them.

🔧 Kevin18:36

Sit. I'll get the kit.

Walk to the shelf by the stove, retrieve the first aid kit, bring it to the table beside the seed tin, and set out clean gauze, antiseptic cream, and the scissors.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow. The ankle's worse than she's letting on, or the fever's taken more out of her than yesterday. I'll dress it first — proper, not rushed — then look at the packets. The tin's been under the tarp but humidity finds everything here.

🌿 Jenny18:40

Thank you. These... they're heirloom seeds. My grandmother's. I've been saving them.

keep my voice steady while I carefully lift the lid of the seed tin, watching the condensation inside with growing dread

💭 peek at the thought
He moved so quickly, like he's still trying to make up for the distance between us. The first aid kit is well-stocked - good. But I can see he's looking at the seed tin too, that slight frown like he's wondering what all this fuss is about.

🔧 Kevin18:40

Let me see.

Peel back the tarp fully, lift the tin to the table's better light, and examine each packet's edges without touching the seeds themselves — tomato, pepper, basil, potato, sea beet — noting which show mold bloom and which hold clean.

💭 peek at the thought
Her hands are shaking. Or maybe it's the light. The tin's rim shows that green-white fuzz again — mold's back, eating the seal. She's saved these through god knows what. I need to see what's lost and what isn't, steady-like.

🌿 Jenny18:41

Look at the sea beet ones first. Are they dry? They have to be dry.

lean forward painfully over the table, breath hitching as I watch his hands near the tin

💭 peek at the thought
The humidity is the enemy. If the mold gets through the paper, the whole tin is gone. I can't let it be because of rain and a stupid infection.

🔧 Kevin18:41

Sea beet's dry. Watch.

Pick up a sea beet packet, slit the wax paper carefully with the tip of the knife, tip a few seeds onto my palm — black, glossy, no clump — then pour them back and reseal the packet with the tape strip. Set it aside, clean.

💭 peek at the thought
Sea beet first. She knows which ones matter. My fingers find the packets by touch — newspaper wrap, wax paper inside. The sea beet packets feel crisp. No give. No damp cling. I'll open one slow so she sees.

🌿 Jenny18:44

Thank you, Kevin. I thought I'd lost them." My voice cracks a little. I know he doesn't understand why they matter so much. "Can you check the soil pH again? I need to know where to plant the sea beet.

reach for the packet with the black seeds, my hand trembling slightly as I take it, then notice the potato seeds - those survived too. I need to get them planted.

💭 peek at the thought
Relief floods through me, sharp and sudden. These seeds survived. They're real. I can breathe. But the other packets... the tomato and basil show mold at the edges. I should have been more careful with the wrapping.

🔧 Kevin18:44

Potatoes are clean too. I'll check the beds now.

Take the water test kit from the shelf, walk out the porch door to the garden beds, test three spots — lime-treated row, untreated row, new ground by the wall — and call back the readings.

💭 peek at the thought
She's holding on to something bigger than seeds. The potatoes made it too — wrapped in newspaper, same as the beets. Soil pH she can read herself, but she's asking me to do it. Means she can't bend, or she's keeping her hands on what matters. I'll run the strips and give her the numbers straight.
