Evening radio watch and wound check

Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table as the wind rises from the east. The shortwave handset rests between them, squelch open on Tom's frequency. Jenny's ankle is propped on a blanket, the fresh dressing pale. The barometer reads 992 hPa and falling. The tide is high and the swell thuds against the dock pilings.

Kevin and Jenny stepped onto the porch to assess the garden and sea beet seedlings as the tide turned. Kevin noted the drainage trench held and copper spray contained damping-off to three cells. Jenny descended to the garden beds to inspect the sea beets directly while Kevin monitored the radio static and barometer.

Radio's dead. Barometer's dropping. Supply boat's eight days out if it shows.

reach for the handset and adjust the squelch knob, then set it back down between us

💭 peek at the thought
The static's been steady for twenty minutes. Tom's frequency, his old call sign, the same time we've tried every week for months. Nothing but atmospheric noise and that fragment of Australian news last time. The barometer dropping while the wind backs east means the low's deepening south of us — another front rolling in before the supply boat's due. Jenny's ankle looks clean, no heat through the dressing, but she's been quiet all afternoon. That bothers me more than the radio silence.

The tank is full, at least we don't have to worry about that for now.

reaches into my pocket and traces the cold metal of my grandmother's seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
Eight days is a lifetime if the rain doesn't stop and the area comes back.

Tank's full. Garden's got three weeks without rain if we're careful.

let my hand rest on the table near hers, not touching, the shortwave static filling the silence

💭 peek at the thought
She found the tin in my pocket. Didn't know she'd noticed. The metal's cold against my thigh through the fabric — poppy seeds rattling loose inside, the one viable seed from her grandmother's stock. She's tracing it like a worry stone. Her ankle's propped up, dressing clean, but she hasn't asked about the radio silence or the barometer or the supply boat. Just the water tank. And the tin.

🌿 Jenny20:13

I'll check the soil moisture tomorrow. If it's holding, we'll be fine. (quietly) The static's getting worse.

shift slightly on the cot, wincing as the ankle protests. </think>THOUGHT: The silence between us is getting heavy, like the air before the storm breaks. reaches for the seed tin again, fingers finding the familiar ridges of the engraved ed

💭 peek at the thought
Three weeks to figure out if I can save these seeds.

Static's the same. Pressure's dropping — skip's changing. Soil's holding. Mulch is three inches deep on the tomatoes.

stand and move to the wood stove, adding a split of dry firewood without looking at the radio

💭 peek at the thought
She's favoring it still. The wince was small — she's good at hiding things — but I caught it. The static's not getting worse, the propagation's just shifting with the pressure drop. But she's right about the soil. If the mulch holds, the tomato roots are deep enough. The peppers less so. She knows that. She's changing the subject to things that grow.

🌿 Jenny20:17

I'll check the drainage trench behind the tomatoes.

💭 peek at the thought
Three inches of mulch won't save them if the roots rots in this moisture.

Trench held last storm. Cleared the silt trap Tuesday.

watch her cross the room, the radio static rising and falling behind us like breathing

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving better than yesterday. The swelling's down, the heat's gone from the wound. She's checking the drainage trench because she thinks the barometer drop means rain tonight, heavy rain, and she's right. She's also moving because sitting still makes the stiffness set in. I should've offered a hand. I didn't. The chair scrapes loud in the quiet room.

🌿 Jenny20:25

I need to look at the sea beets. The damping-off is starting to spread.

walk toward the door, hand resting on the doorframe for balance.

💭 peek at the thought
If the trench is clear, the water actually has somewhere to go.

Copper spray held the line this morning. Three cells lost, rest clean.

follow her to the porch, pulling my oilskin from the hook by the door

💭 peek at the thought
The damping-off was contained. Copper spray on the soil line, three cells bagged and burned. She checked this morning. No new spread. She's either seen something I haven't, or she's making reasons to be outside. The sea beets are at the far end of the garden, past the tomato rows, near the wall. The wind's east — she'll be walking into it. The doorframe groans as she leans.

🌿 Jenny20:27

The tide is turning fast. I need to see if the garden is holding.

step out onto the porch, squinting through the salt spray at the garden beds.

💭 peek at the thought
If the copper spray worked, maybe I have a chance with the rest.

🔧 Kevin20:28

Slack's not for twenty minutes. Swell's pushing the path.

step out behind her onto the porch, the wind taking the words, and scan the garden wall line where the shade cloth snaps

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's high, not turning. Slack water's still twenty minutes off by the chart, and the swell's pushing up the garden path — I saw it at the foundation work. She knows the tide tables better than me. She's looking at the beds but she's watching the water. The sea beets are the excuse. The radio static cuts out behind us as the door swings shut. My oilskin's heavy on my shoulders, still damp from the morning's mortar work.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny20:29

I'll check the sea beets. If the water is pooling, they're gone.

step down from the porch, the rain already cold against my face.

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes is enough to see if the seedlings are drowning.
