Morning Routines Before the Front

Kevin stands at the porch rail with the crowbar ready, watching the tide fall toward the floating crate bobbing in the surf near the dock. Jenny sits propped against the doorframe with her ankle elevated on a folded tarp, a basin of warm salt water and the mint-honey poultice beside her. The barometer holds at 990 hPa, the sky a uniform grey ceiling, and the generator hums steady from its storm lashings.

Kevin sits on the porch steps watching the tide recede while waiting to move the dock planks. Jenny applies a poultice to her ankle and waits for the water to drop low enough.

🔧 Kevin21:03

Low water in twenty minutes. I'll walk the dock planks out to it.

walk to the dock with the crowbar

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's dropping right on schedule. Crate's sitting where the current pushed it last high water — maybe thirty metres off the dock end. Need to get the crowbar under it before the swell picks up with this front. Jenny's ankle looks clean, no new red tracking. She's quiet today. Both of us are.

Wait for the tide to drop further. The planks are still slick with barnacles.

apply the mint-honey poultice to the ankle and wrap it in clean gauze.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out now, the current will take the crate before he can hook it.

🔧 Kevin21:05

Aye. Twenty minutes.

lean the crowbar against the porch rail and sit on the top step, watching the water recede

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The barnacle cut on my forearm three weeks back still itches when it rains. Twenty more minutes and the planks'll be dry enough to grip. She's methodical with the poultice — same way she sorts seeds. Hands don't shake.

🌿 Jenny21:05

I need to check the pH of the south slope after I soak this leg. If I can stand.

sketch the morphology of the sea beet growing near the waterline in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide.

🔧 Kevin21:07

Take the walking stick. Lean hard on it. I'll bring the test kit down after the crate.

nod toward the spade handle propped by the door, the one I shaved smooth last month

💭 peek at the thought
South slope pH's been holding 5.5 to 5.8 untreated. Lime beds steady at 6.8. She knows the numbers better than I do. The stand is the question — ankle's been swollen four days now. Antibiotics should've turned the corner by day three.

🌿 Jenny21:07

Don't stay out too long. The wind is shifting faster than the own.

tighten the way wrap and watch the horizon for the water to clear the rocks.

💭 peek at the thought
The salt air is getting into the wound, but the infection is stubborn.

🔧 Kevin21:09

Wind's backing west-northwest. Front'll hit by noon if it holds.

stand and test the dock planks with one boot — damp still, but the barnacles are dry enough to grip

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing west-northwest. She feels it in the ankle before the barometer catches it. "Faster than the own" — she means the barometer. Or the tide. Or me. The crate's sitting lower now, barnacle line showing on its flank. Salt-crusted heavy. Could be provisions, could be rope, could be nothing. Twenty minutes closer to low.

🌿 Jenny21:09

I'll be on the porch. My ankle is screaming at the pressure.

move the leg into the salt water basin and wait for the sting to dull.

💭 peek at the thought
If the front hits at noon, the crate will be lost to the surge.

🔧 Kevin21:11

Holler if the fever spikes. I'll hear you over the generator.

step onto the dock planks, crowbar in hand, and walk out toward the crate as the tide sucks back

💭 peek at the thought
She's not one to admit pain. "Screaming" means she's past enduring it quiet. The salt soak'll draw it, but the swelling's tracking toward the knee still. Three days of doxycycline left. If the red streaks show again by morning, I'm cutting the dose interval and praying the metronidazole holds the anaerobic flank. Crate's close now. Water's down to the lowest rung of the dock ladder.
