The Heat Lingers

The tide remains high as the sun begins to dip, and the pressure continues to drop, signaling a change in the weather.

The air is heavy and still, the flat sky darkening as the clouds thicken over the island. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the intertidal zone. Kevin and Jenny have managed to haul the waterlogged supply crate from the dock, securing it high up on the shingle bank just before the evening swell could have claimed it.

Kevin — walk to the cottage, check the generator fuel level, then haul the waterlogged crate fully ashore using the new rope and crowbar as a lever, securing it clear of the tide line before dark.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer’s still falling, tide’s high, and I can feel the air tightening like a rope before it snaps. Jenny’s inside again, ankle wrapped, seed tin open on the table. I should’ve said something about Tom by now. But words won’t fix the dock or keep the rain off the generator. Action’s the only language that still works here.

🌿 Jenny23:43

The air is turning. We need to get that crate off the jetty before the swell peaks.

Sketch the pattern of the rot on the crate's wood in the notebook while waiting for the fever to subside.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast for this heat; if that storm hits before the boat comes, I won't have the strength for the garden.

🔧 Kevin23:46

Hand me the crowbar and the bowline. I’ll break it loose from the piling — you keep tension on the rope so it doesn’t shoot back when it gives.

Jam the crowbar between the crate and the piling, use my weight to lever it seaward just enough to slip the bowline underneath, then signal Jenny to pull tight as I pry it free, guiding it ashore clear of the jetty before the next swell lif

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — the swell’s building under this dropping pressure, and that crate’s a pendulum waiting to smash the pilings. She’s sketching the rot pattern like it’s a map, but I know the real danger’s in the weight and the timing. If we don’t get it clear now, it’ll take a plank with it when it swings.

🌿 Jenny23:48

The tide is coming in fast. Help me move.

Apply a fresh layer of mint-beet poultice to the ankle, feeling the throbbing heat through the cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
If the fever doesn't break down soon, I won't be able to reach the south slope for the pH tests.

🔧 Kevin23:48

On three. Lift with your legs, not your back. I’ve got the seaward side.

Brace my knees, grip the crate’s lower corner with both hands, and lift in sync with Jenny on the count of three, dragging it clear of the intertidal zone and up onto the shingle bank above the high-tide mark, then turn and help her to the

💭 peek at the thought
She’s in pain but moving — poultice reapplied, jaw tight. The crate’s still half in the surf, and the tide’s not waiting. Every minute we delay, the swell gets a better shot at heaving it sideways into the dock. No time for hesitation. We move it together, or we lose it — and maybe a plank with it.

🌿 Jenny23:49

It's too heavy. Get it to the way now.

Wipe the sweat from my eyes with the back of my hand and look at the thickening clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if that storm hits before the boat, the seeds will be lost to salt.

🔧 Kevin23:49

Not all the way to the shed — just get it past the mooring ring and up on the rocks. I’ll hold it, you shove with your feet.

Plant myself behind the crate, take the weight on my shoulders and legs, and inch it forward as Jenny kicks and shoves from behind, using the slope of the shingle to lever it past the dock pilings and onto the upper beach where the swell ca

💭 peek at the thought
She’s pushing through the pain, but the crate’s waterlogged — three times its dry weight, and we’re fighting the suck of the sand and the incoming tide. We can’t lift it far. The only move now is to get it past the immediate danger zone: clear of the jetty, above the wave reach, even if it’s not all the way to the storage shed. Shelter’s secondary. Survival of the dock comes first.

🌿 Jenny23:53

Just a bit further. Almost to the line.

Lean my weight against the wood, gritting my teeth as the ankle throb spikes with every movement.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get this crate high enough, the salt spray will ruin my grandmother's seeds.
