A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The heavy midday air hangs still as the pressure begins to shift slightly. Kevin and Jenny spend the heat tending to the cottage's needs and preparing for the supply boat's arrival in two days.

I’m going to lash the seed tin E into the dry bag on the dinghy. Then I’ll check the Yanmar injector timing. After that, I’ll write that line to Tom and leave it in the radio shack.

walk to the dinghy, lift the dry bag from the starboard gunwale, open it, place the metal tin marked E inside, lash it securely with the spare half-inch rope using a clove hitch and two half-hitches, then close and secure the bag.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain’s easing, but the air’s thick. I can feel the front pressing in—wind’ll shift soon. Got to get that seed tin E secured before the damp gets worse. Jenny’s resting, but I saw her wince when she stood. Ankle’s holding, but not healed.

Don't let the bag sit in the water. The salt air will get through the seal.

Sit on the porch step and watch him work, sketching the specific knot he's using in the margin of my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving the seeds to the boat. If the boat doesn't come, they're lost to the salt and the rot.

Good eye. I'll bury the tail.

finish the lashing by tucking the working end back under the standing part and pulling tight, then lift the dry bag and set it on the dinghy's thwart, clear of the bilge, and secure it to the forward eye bolt with a short length of line.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Salt creeps into everything. The bag's waterproof but the knot's the weak point. I'll tuck the tail under the standing part—makes it self-tending if the bag shifts.

Make sure the eye bolt is tight. The swell will shake the boat tonight.

Stand up and stretch my stiff ankle, then head toward the kitchen to find the mackerel.

💭 peek at the thought
It's secure for now, but the humidity is a thief I can't outrun just yet.

On it.

walk to the dinghy's bow, grip the forward eye bolt with the 19mm wrench, test it—loose, quarter turn of play—tighten it down hard, then give it a kick to seat it, wipe hands on trousers, and head to the workshop to pull the Yanmar's inject

💭 peek at the thought
Eye bolt's been loose since the last storm. She's seen it work. I'll check it now before the swell picks up.

Jenny — open the pantry and take out a tin of mackerel and a can opener.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he listens when it's mechanical. Now, food. I can't think straight with this hollow feeling in my stomach.

walk to the workshop, pick up the torque wrench (already set to 35Nm), the 12mm socket, the timing pin, and the Yanmar service manual, then return to the dinghy, kneel beside the engine, remove the pump inspection cover, and insert the timi

💭 peek at the thought
Right. Injector pump timing. Need the torque wrench set to 35Nm, the timing pin, and the manual. Workshop's aft of the cottage. I'll grab the tools and pull the pump cover.

🌿 Jenny02:21

Thanks.

Sit at the kitchen table and pry the way tin open with the opener, watching the grey light over the water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the timing. I need to focus on the protein before my leg starts throbbing again.
