Night watch and radio silence
The cottage is dark save for the storm lantern burning low on the table. Kevin sits at the radio desk, headphones on, listening to static on Tom's frequency. Jenny lies on the cot, ankle elevated on a folded blanket, the heirloom seed tin within reach. The barometer holds at 999 hPa. Outside, the sea is a black mirror reflecting no stars.
Kevin and Jenny spend the evening in the cottage as the tide recedes. Jenny's fever has broken, but her ankle remains swollen despite the poultice. They quietly prepare for the supply boat arrival in two days.

You're going to give yourself a headache listening to that noise.
Reach out and touch the cool metal of the seed tin, fingers tracing the 'E'.

Headache's already here. Comes with the frequency.
lift the headphones off, let them hang around my neck, reach for the tin mug of cold tea beside the logbook

Drink some water instead. The tea's cold.
Shift slightly on the cot, wincing as the ankle throbs.
