The Storm Breaks

The first heavy drops of rain hit the tin roof as the wind picks up from the sea.

Kevin heads to the dock to secure the dinghy and generator as the wind picks up. Jenny stays in the cottage, managing her fever and watching the ankle infection while the tide rises.

🔧 Kevin05:53

Weather's turning. Going to check the dinghy and generator.

Walk to the porch door, pull on oilskin jacket, and head down to the dock to inspect dinghy mooring lines and generator storm lashings.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Wind's backing southwest — barometer was 1012 and steady but that was hours ago. Need to check the dinghy lines and the generator lashings before the surge hits the dock.

🌿 Jenny05:55

Don't get too soaked in the rain.

Reach for the water bottle on the nightstand, wincing as the movement sends a jolt of heat through my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind gets too high, the seedlings will be lost, and I can't even stand up to go save them.

🔧 Kevin05:55

Won't be long. Holler if you need anything.

Step out onto the porch, pull the oilskin hood up, and descend the steps to the dock in the driving rain.

💭 peek at the thought
She's still in pain. Ankle's not right. But she's drinking water, that's something.

🌿 Jenny05:57

Jenny — lie back against the pillows and stare at the ceiling, listening to the rain drumming on the tin roof.

💭 peek at the thought
I can't holler. I can barely breathe without feeling the throb in my leg.

🔧 Kevin05:57

Kevin — walk the dock planks to the dinghy, crouch under the tarp to inspect bow line chafe guard, stern spring lines, and storm anchor warp tension. Check generator ratchet straps on the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's coming down hard now. Wind's steady southwest, twenty, twenty-five knots. Tide's pushing up against the pilings. Need to check the dinghy's bow line chafe gear, the stern spring doubling, the storm anchor warp. Generator straps were tight this morning but vibration works things loose.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:59

Jenny — slowly push myself up to a sitting position, teeth clenched against the pulsing pain in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of that rain is too fast. I can't just lie here while the garden gets hammered.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin05:59

Kevin — at the dinghy, run hands along the bow line where it passes the chock — feel for chafe, check the leather guard. Test the stern spring tension, both lines. Verify storm anchor warp isn't sawing on the bow eye.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving. That's good. But the grimace — infection's still tracking. Metronidazole course finished. Doxycycline done. No more antibiotics unless the supply boat comes through. Ten days out. Barometer dropping.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:03

Jenny — grab the ankle brace and start toward the door, taking slow steps to avoid putting full weight on the infected wound. </think>THOUGHT: I need to check the garden tarp before the wind catches the loose corner. Grab the ankle brace and start

💭 peek at the thought
I need to check the garden tarp before the wind catches the loose corner.

🔧 Kevin06:04

Jenny. Stay inside. I've got the lines.

Glance back from the dinghy toward the cottage porch, seeing her through the rain. Turn back to finish checking the storm anchor warp shackle.

💭 peek at the thought
She's coming out. On that ankle. In this rain. Storm's building and she's heading for the door.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:05

The seedlings, Kevin! The wind will rip the cloth!

Limp toward the porch door, leaning heavily against the wall for support.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I'm a broken gear. I'm a botanist, not a patient.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin06:05

I'm on it. Get back inside.

Drop the dinghy warp, turn and run up the dock planks toward the garden, oilskin flapping in the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
Tomato rows. Shade cloth corners. She's right — the oak stakes hold but the wind's backing southwest, gusting. If the cloth tears loose it'll take the seedlings with it. She shouldn't be on that leg.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:07

Jenny — stop at the porch edge, clutching the doorframe and watching him through the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so bossy. I can see the garden from here; he's going to the wrong corner first.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin06:07

Kevin — sprint up the slope to the garden, boots sliding on wet grass. Grab the loose shade cloth corner flapping in the wind, haul it down to the oak stake.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching. Good — means she's not following. Rain's horizontal now. Garden's fifty metres up the slope. Tomato stakes are driven but the cloth's only battened on three corners since the coconut crab shredded the fourth anchor point. Need timber strips and the spare line from the porch.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:09

Jenny — slide back down into the bedroom and collapse onto the cot, exhausted by the effort.

💭 peek at the thought
Finally. If he'd let it rip, the salt spray would have scorched the tomatoes.
