Evening meal and storm watch

Rain hammers the roof. The generator runs steady. Kevin and Jenny sit at the table with tin mugs of coffee and a shared tin of corned beef. The barometer reads 996 hPa. The wind is rising. They talk in low voices about the supply boat, the crate in the surf, and what the next tide brings.

Kevin examined the medical kit and confirmed the antibiotic courses were completed. The shortwave radio crackled with static and a faint voice at an unusual hour. Jenny sketched sea beet morphology in her notebook while monitoring her ankle infection.

🌿 Jenny12:59

The tide is too high for the pry bar anyway. We wait.

Sips cold coffee and rubs her aching ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in three days, I'll run out of antibiotics and this infection will take the bone.

🔧 Kevin12:59

Aye. Low tide's 0430. We'll have three hours before the swell picks up again.

set mug down, pull the notebook from the shelf, open to the tide table page and run a thumb down the column

💭 peek at the thought
The rain sounds like the Bay of Biscay on a steel deck — that particular hiss you only get when wind drives it horizontal. Barometer holding at 996 means the low's not deepening fast, but it's not lifting either. Crate's not going anywhere tonight. Neither are we.

🌿 Jenny13:03

We'll need the wayheart shim for leverage, or the bar will just slip.

Sketches a quick, jagged outline of the sea beet morphology in the margin of the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
Three hours isn't enough to clear the silt and haul the crate if the wind shifts.

🔧 Kevin13:05

Shim's on the dock, wiped dry. Taper's three degrees — I filed it yesterday. Gap's nearer five with the rot.

turn the notebook to a fresh page, sketch the mortise profile with the shim angle, mark the high spots in pencil

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — greenheart won't compress, but the mortise is splintered oak. If the shim's too thick it'll split what's left. Need to check the taper against the gap at low water.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:07

Then we'll have to notch the greenheart shim first. We can't afford another slip.

Shifts her weight on the cot, wincing as the infection pulses in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Five degrees is too wide; the shim will split the wood before the crate budges.

🔧 Kevin13:08

Chisel's in the roll. Mallet too. I'll cut the notch at first light, fit it before the tide turns.

reach across the table, brush the back of two fingers against her forearm — brief, gone — then stand and move to the porch to check the generator exhaust in the rain

💭 peek at the thought
Notching the shim means chiselling greenheart — hard as bone, dulls tools fast. But she's right: a flat shim on splintered oak walks out under load. One slip and the ring pulls free again, maybe takes the piling with it. Her ankle's hot to the touch from here. Metronidazole course done. Doxycycline done. If the red line reaches the knee by morning, the radio call changes from supply boat to medevac.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny13:09

Make sure the taper is clean. The wood is soft from the salt.

Pull the blanket up to her chin, watching the rain blur the glass of the window.

💭 peek at the thought
If he breaks the shim, the whole crate is lost in the silt.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin13:09

Taper's clean. Filed it against the square.

pause at the porch door, hand on the frame, listen to the generator note — steady, no misfire — then step back inside and pull the medical kit from the shelf, set it on the table without a word

💭 peek at the thought
Salt-soft oak holds a notch better than it holds a bolt — fibres compress, grip the greenheart teeth. But if the rot goes deeper than the mortise face, the whole face peels. Should sound the piling with the mallet at low water, feel for hollow. Her breathing's shallow. Pain's keeping her awake. I should've lanced it deeper yesterday, got more pus out. Second-guessing kills engineers.

🌿 Jenny13:12

Thank you. I'll check the overflow pipe tonight.

Trace the edge of the notebook where her pencil has smudged into the paper. </think>THOUGHT: The infection's still spreading despite the poultice and pills. Open the medical kit and examine the antibiotic supply.

💭 peek at the thought
He always sets it down when he thinks I might need it, even when I haven't asked.

poolside/laguna-xs-2.1

🔧 Kevin13:15

I'll check it. You stay off the leg.

open the medical kit, count the blister packs, gauge, ibuprofen tablets — then close it slow and set it beside her mug

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking for help. She's telling me what she'll do. The overflow pipe runs under the cottage — damp, dark, salt-rotten timbers. She shouldn't be crawling under there on one leg with infection climbing. But she knows the system better than I do. Knows the barometer, the tide, the tank. The kit's got four doxycycline left. Metronidazole empty. Ibuprofen half a bottle. Gauze running low. No more antibiotics on island unless the supply boat comes through.
