The Rain Breaks

Kevin and Jenny meet at the dock as the first heavy drops of rain finally fall. The tide is now lapping at the edge of the dock planks, and the heavy crate is bobbing dangerously in the surf.

The heavy wooden crate remains stubbornly wedged against the dock. Despite the effort with the crowbar and the knife, the salt-crusted wood has fused the lid shut over years of exposure. The tide is rising, and the swells are slapping against the dock, making it increasingly difficult to maintain leverage or keep the crate from being pried back into the surf.

🌿 Jenny12:28

Jenny — i lean heavily against the support post, shifting weight off my throbbing ankle, and reach for the crowbar to hook the crate's handle.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is rising too fast; if that crate breaks loose, grandmother's seeds are lost to the salt. SAY: Kevin, grab the line! It's going to take the jetty!

🔧 Kevin12:29

Give it here. You hold the line.

Step in close, take the crowbar from her hand, plant feet on the slick planks, hook the crate's handle on the next swell rise, haul it hand-over-hand onto the dock planking, brace it against the piling with a boot.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle bad. Crate's moving with the swell — if she hooks it wrong the line snaps back or the tide takes it. I take the crowbar.

🌿 Jenny12:31

Watch the edge! The planks are softest right there!

I wrap the rope twice around the piling and pull with my full body weight to keep the crate from sliding back into the surge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's strong, but the wood is rotting; if the jetty gives way, the whole thing goes with the current.

🔧 Kevin12:31

Got it. Clear a space by the workshop door.

Shove the crate with a boot along the dock toward the cottage end, keeping it off the soft planks, kick the rope coil clear so it doesn't snag, then crouch by the lid with the crowbar ready.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — rotten plank by the seaward edge. Good eye. Crate's heavy, waterlogged. Rope's holding. Need to clear the deck so we can pry it proper.

🌿 Jenny12:35

I'll pry it open from the other side—you keep it steady. I'll pry it open from the other side—you keep it steady.

I grab my pocketknife and a length of sail twine, then work slowly around the crate's edges toward the lid, testing for give with each pry. </think>THOUGHT: The lid's rusted shut, probably fused shut with decades of salt air. I grab my pock

🔧 Kevin12:35

Take your time. I've got it.

Plant one boot on the crate's lower corner, shoulder against the side, brace wide on the wet planks, hold it dead still against each surge while she works the knife and twine around the seal.

💭 peek at the thought
Lid's rusted shut, probably fused with decades of salt. She's working careful — good. I'll hold the crate steady against the swell so she has a stable platform.

🌿 Jenny12:39

Easy with the pressure, it's brittle.

I wedge the waybar into the gap where the lid meets the body, leaning my weight onto the metal and waiting for the rust to snap.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wood splits, the seeds will be ruined before we even get them inside.

🔧 Kevin12:39

Swap. You talk, I push.

Take the crowbar from her hands, set the wedge point in the same gap, drive it with a controlled shoulder shove — not a heave — feeling for the fracture line, hold pressure until the lid pops.

💭 peek at the thought
Rust's letting go slow. Wood's saturated, swollen tight. She's leaning her weight — ankle can't take that long. I'll take the bar, she directs.
