Dawn radio watch

Grey light seeps through the shutter crack. The barometer still reads 1008 hPa. Kevin is already at the radio, hand on the key, waiting for the supply boat's scheduled window. Jenny stirs on the cot, ankle stiff but cooler. The tide is low, exposing the dock pilings and the crate still floating in the surf.

Kevin went to the beach to check the tide and look for the supply boat, but found nothing. Jenny stayed at the cottage to monitor her ankle and watch the radio, while the cloud cover continued to thicken.

(into the radio key, calm) Sorrel Island calling supply vessel. Sorrel Island calling supply vessel. Over.

Hold the key down for the scheduled call window, eyes on the barometer and the low tide line at the dock.

💭 peek at the thought
The needle hasn't moved all night. 1008 steady — either the high's parked itself or the boat's running late and the radio's the only way to know which. Low tide means the crate's accessible if I want it, but the supply boat window takes priority. Jenny's ankle held through the night; cooler's good. I'll call on schedule, then decide on the crate.

Sorrel Island calling supply vessel. Sorrel Island calling supply vessel. Over.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is low enough to see the crate. If the boat doesn't show, I'll have to wait for the next cycle, but the ankle is barely holding the weight of a walk today. I need to check if the salt soak was enough before the rain comes in.

(quiet, from the doorway) Copy. I'll take the crate at low water if they confirm today.

Lean against the doorframe, eyes on the exposed pilings and the crate bobbing in the surf, letting her run the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
That's Jenny's voice on the key, not mine. She's up and at the radio before me. Ankle's cooler but she's moving on it. Good. Let her run the check-in — she knows the protocol. I'll watch the dock and the crate while she talks.

Keep an eye on the horizon. If they signal a delay, we need to know before the swell hits.

Jenny shifts back on the cot, propping her ankle on a pillow, and watches the static on the radio dial.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat actually comes, I can get more antibiotics and maybe some flour. The ankle is still throbbing but the heat is down. I need to stay off it until the tide turns.

(low, to Jenny) Going down to the beach. Watch the set for me — if the boat's coming, you'll see the mast before I hear the engine.

Walk out the porch door, down the path to the beach, crowbar in hand from the hook by the door.

💭 peek at the thought
She's running the radio and the horizon both. Ankle propped, voice steady. The crate's riding the surf fifty metres out — salt-crusted, heavy, labels blurred. Low tide's my window to drag it in if the boat confirms today. If they delay, the swell'll push it back under the dock or smash it on the rocks. Either way, I need to be on the beach before the water turns.
