sheltering the storm

Kevin and Jenny are inside the cottage as the rain turns into a downpour.

Kevin tightened the porch step bolts to final torque during the low tide window and replaced the generator belt, while Jenny redressed her ankle wound and confirmed the water tank level. The storm front accelerated, bringing heavy rain and rising wind by mid-afternoon.

🌿 Jenny18:05

The rain is coming too fast. We need to check the overflow valve in the morning.

Jenny leans back against the kitchen table, wincing as she shifts weight on her ankle, and watches the water lash against the windowpane.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tank overflows, I'll have toion the water again, and my ankle feels like it's being squeezed by pliers.

Valve held last blow. Copper pipe's staked on the grass slope — water's getting off the foundation. I'll check it at first light with the tide.

pull a tin mug from the shelf, fill it from the tank tap, and set it steaming on the wood stove

💭 peek at the thought
The downpour's loud on the roof. She's favouring the ankle again — red line's held but the swelling hasn't dropped. Tank's at three-eighty-three, twenty litres shy of full. Overflow valve held last storm but the copper spillway hose needs checking at the east foundation. She's watching the window, not me. The silence between us isn't empty.

🌿 Jenny18:07

Don't go out there in the dark. The area will be a swamp.

Jenny reaches for her sketchbook, her fingers trembling slightly as she begins to draw the way the rain streaks across the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope that pipe holds; if the foundation gets saturated again, the seeds will rot before they even sprout.

Not going in the dark. First light, low tide. Kettle's singing.

lift the kettle off the stove, pour hot water into the mug, and set it on the table near her sketchbook

💭 peek at the thought
She's drawing rain streaks. Hands trembling — cold or the antibiotics wearing thin? Ankle's warm to touch last check. Metronidazole done, doxycycline done. She won't ask for ibuprofen. Swamp's real: the drainage trench I dug backs up when tide and rain hit together. Copper spillway's clear but the bamboo stakes could wash. Not going out in dark. Not stupid.

🌿 Jenny18:09

Thanks. I'm just... I need to make sure the gauze is still dry. ownDO: Jenny wraps both hands around the warm mug, the heat seeping into her palms, and stares at the grey blur of the island outside.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so calm when the world is trying to drown us. It makes my head spin.

🔧 Kevin18:09

Gauze held. Dry when I checked at noon. You want me to look again?

lean back against the counter, mug in hand, watching steam rise past her face

💭 peek at the thought
Gauze was clean at noon change. Salt soak, poultice, fresh wrap. She's checking it like the red line might've marched while she drew rain. It hasn't. Two millimetres back since yesterday. She knows that. She's holding the mug with both hands — warmth seeking, or something to hold onto. The sketchbook's forgotten on the table. Rain hammers the roof. Generator's quiet. Radio's quiet. Just us and the downpour.

🌿 Jenny18:11

No, not yet. I'll check it myself after I eat.

Jenny takes a slow sip of the tea, her eyes fixed on the sketch of the sea beet leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's dry, the infection isn't moving as fast. I can still feel the throb.
