Porch radio lesson as light fails
Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch steps as evening deepens. The shortwave radio rests on a folded tarp between them, its shattered aerial sheltered under the eaves. Kevin has the Mayday procedure notes ready. Jenny's ankle is propped on a cushion, the red streaks marked with pen. The tide is high now, slapping the dock pilings. The barometer reads 997 hPa and falling.
Kevin sits Jenny on the porch to teach her the Mayday procedure while the tide sits high against the dock. Jenny practices the phonetic alphabet and the distress format, but the radio returns only static despite her repeated transmissions.
Right. Phonetic alphabet first. You know most of it. We'll do the bits that get people killed." I tap the radio's side. "Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu. Say it back.
hand her the folded procedure card, then lean back against the porch post, boots crossed at the ankles

Alpha, Bravo, Charlie... I know them, Kevin.
Take the card with a trembling hand and trace the letters with a fingernail.

You do. Good. Now the format. Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. This is [vessel name or call sign] three times. Position. Nature of distress. Number of souls. Assistance required. Over. I point at the card. "Fill in the blanks for us. Sorrel Island caretaker cottage. Two souls. Medical evacuation. You say it.
tap the card where the position line sits, then settle back, watching the tide push against the dock

Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. This is Jenny, Sorrel Island caretaker. Position: 14 degrees South, 162 degrees West. Nature of distress: severe infection, potential sepsis. Two souls on board. Requesting medical evacuation. Over.
Write the coordinates in the notebook next to the sea beet sketch.

Good. Now you wait. Count to thirty. If no answer, you repeat. Same words, same order. You don't add, you don't explain. The coastguard writes it down exactly as you say it. I tap the transmit button. "Try it. Key down, speak, key up. Don't hold it open.
slide the radio closer to her on the tarp, finger hovering near the volume knob

Count it. One... two... three...
watch the seconds on my wristwatch, thumb resting on the squelch knob, ready to kill the hiss the moment someone answers

Ten seconds are up.
Grip the edge of the table, my knuckles white, staring at the static on the radio dial.

Keep counting. Twenty. Twenty-one.
glance at the barometer on the wall, then back to the radio, hand still on the squelch

Press the transmit button again, waiting for a voice to break the static.
