The Thickening Sky
Kevin sits on the porch checking the barometer as the clouds darken over the island. Inside, Jenny sits at the kitchen table, keeping her ankle submerged in the salt basin while organizing the dried heirloom seed packets on newspaper.
Kevin begins the first session of radio Mayday procedure training while the sky darkens. Jenny rests in the cottage, managing her throbbing ankle and watching for the rain. The air is heavy, signaling the arrival of the wet season storm.
Storm's moving faster than the radio said. You need to be in the bedroom with that leg up, not sorting packets.
Tap the barometer face with one finger, then turn and walk into the kitchen toward the table where she's working.

The seeds won't sort themselves while the world ends outside, and the salt is actually helping today.
Jenny pulls her leg out of the water, wincing at the sharp sting, and pushes a pile of tomato seeds away from him.

The world's not ending. Just raining. Bed. Now. The seeds'll keep.
Reach across the table, palm flat, and cover the tomato packet she just pushed aside — stopping her hand without gripping it.

If I go to bed now, I won't wake up to finish the sea beet sketches.
Jenny pulls her hand from under his, stands up abruptly with the chair scraping harshly against the stone, and limps toward the stove.

The sea beet's been here four thousand years. It'll wait two days.
Step around the table, catch her elbow on the stove side — firm, not rough — and turn her toward the bedroom door.

It's not about the plants, Kevin, it's about the light fading.
Jenny jerks her arm away from his grip, breath coming in shallow hitches, staring at the unfinished sketch on the table.

I'll hold the lamp. You draw. In bed.
Let go of her elbow. Walk to the cot-side shelf, pick up the LED headlamp and the open notebook with the sea beet sketches, then carry both to the bedroom and set them on the pillow.

I need the pencil. Just for one minute.
Jenny stands frozen by the stove, her weight leaning on the cold stone, as she looks back at the table for her tools.

Kevin — pick up the pencil from the table — tucked in the notebook spine — and hold it out to her, handle first, without stepping closer.

Thank you.
Jenny takes the pencil with a trembling hand, then limps toward the bedroom, avoiding looking at his face.
