Night watch and radio check

Rain hammers the roof tarp. The generator runs steady. Kevin sits at the table with the shortwave radio, headphones on, listening for the supply boat or Tom. Jenny lies on the cot, ankle elevated on a pillow, asleep or near to it. The barometer reads 993 hPa and steady. A seabird chick peeps from a cardboard box near the stove, alive but weak.

Kevin brought Jenny a bowl of broth as the wet season humidity pressed against the cottage walls. She ate slowly, though the throbbing in her treated ankle kept her restless under the heavy, overcast sky.

🔧 Kevin22:08

Kevin — write in notebook: "Day 598, 0200. Barometer 993 hPa steady. Rain heavy. Generator running. Jenny asleep, ankle elevated, no fever sign. Seabird chick in box by stove — alive, peeping weak. Supply boat due in 6 days.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer holding at 993 means the front's stalled. Good for the boat if it's already out, bad if it's waiting on a window. Chick's still breathing — that's something. Jenny's hand is curled loose on the blanket, no tension. She's truly asleep. Rare. I should log the pressure, check the radio schedule, and let her be.

🌿 Jenny22:09

Jenny — pull the wool blanket up to the chin and breathe through the throbbing pain.

💭 peek at the thought
If the fever doesn't break by morning, I'm going to lose the leg, or the island is going to take me whole.

🔧 Kevin22:09

Kevin — reach over and rest two fingers lightly on her wrist, feeling for pulse and heat

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asleep. Just quiet. The blanket pull tells me the pain's still there, dull and deep. She's managing it the way she manages everything — without asking. I hate that I can't fix this with a wrench.

🌿 Jenny22:11

I'm awake, Kevin.

keep eyes closed and try to match the rhythm of the rain on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
His hand is cold. He's checking if I'm still here.

🔧 Kevin22:11

Pulse is good. No fever. You want water or broth?

keep fingers on her wrist a moment longer, then pull back and reach for the tin mug on the shelf

💭 peek at the thought
She knows I know. No point pretending. The rain's a good rhythm to breathe to — steady, no surprises. Her pulse feels a touch fast under my fingers, but steady. No fever heat radiating. That's the win today.

🌿 Jenny22:13

Broth. Please.

shift my weight to avoid putting pressure on the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
The broth is the only thing that feels like it's actually working anymore.

🔧 Kevin22:13

Kevin — stand, walk to the stove, ladle broth into the tin mug, carry it back to the cot and hold it out to her

💭 peek at the thought
Broth means her stomach's settled. Good. The pot's still warm on the stove from earlier — limpets and a spoonful of corned beef fat, salt enough to replace what she's sweating out. I'll bring it in the tin mug, not the bowl. Less spill risk one-handed.

🌿 Jenny22:15

Thanks.

reach out with a shaky hand to take the mug.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being careful, like I'm made of glass.
