Post-Rain Stasis

Kevin sits on the edge of the bed checking the barometer while rain lashes against the shutter. Jenny lies back with her ankle propped on a pillow, sketching the sea beet morphology in her notebook.

The rain continues as a steady, heavy drizzle, keeping the air thick and humid. The tide remains high, waves lapping hungrily against the dock pilings. Inside the cottage, the smell of damp wood and medicinal herbs lingers as the leak seeps the floorboards.

Barometer's holding at 992. Steady for six hours now. Might actually hold.

Set the barometer back on the shelf and pull the wool blanket tighter around my shoulders, keeping my eyes on the window where the rain hits the glass sideways.

💭 peek at the thought
She's holding the pencil like it's a scalpel — precise, deliberate, not shaking anymore. The fever broke sometime after midnight. I didn't sleep. Just watched her breathing change.

Don't get your hopes up yet. The island likes to lie.

Press the pencil to the paper to shade the sea much's salt glands, my hand shaking slightly from the fever.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure stays, I can move to the garden tomorrow, but my leg feels like molten lead.

Not hoping. Just noticing.

Reach for the tin mug on the bedside shelf — cold tea from three hours ago — and drink it in one swallow without grimacing.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. It always lies. But six hours steady is six hours more than we had yesterday.

Cold tea helps. Would you fetch some from the pot?

Keep shading the sea beet's salt glands, the pencil lead catching the faint light from the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He drinks it fast now, like he's learned something about timing.

🔧 Kevin22:28

Yeah.

Push up from the bed and cross to the kitchen in three strides, pour from the iron pot on the stove into the tin mug, and bring it back to the bedside without spilling a drop.

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand's still trembling. Barely. She won't ask me to stay. Won't say she needs me close.

🌿 Jenny22:31

Thank you.

Take a slow sip of the warm tea, the steam clearing my face for a second.

💭 peek at the thought
He's getting better at the silence, even if the Air is heavy.

Sketches look good. The gland density gradient — you got the transition zone clean.

Sit back on the edge of the bed, mug warming my palms, and watch the rain streak the window instead of looking at her face.

💭 peek at the thought
Steam catches the pencil lead on the page — salt glands rendered in cross-section, each one perfect. She's memorizing them. Like she memorizes everything that might disappear.

🌿 Jenny22:35

It's the only thing that makes sense right now.

Trace the edge of a leaf with the pencil, focusing on the serrated margin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the work because it's easier than looking at me.
