The Arrival of the Front

The first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated metal roof, and the wind begins to howl through the spruce trees.

Kevin replaced the roof flashing with longer lag bolts and installed the ridge brace to secure against the coming storm. Jenny spent the day indoors documenting the sea beet transect notes while managing her rising fever.

Storm's hitting. Going to check the dinghy and garden.

Walk to the dock to check dinghy lines and chafe gear.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Barometer at 991 was lying — it's dropping fast now. Need to secure the dinghy lines and check the garden tarp before the wind tears it loose.

The tide is too high, Kevin. Just check the lines and come back!

pull the blanket tighter around my aching leg and watch the window.

If he goes out in that surge, he'll slip on the rocks and take the whole boat with him.

Lines only. Be right back.

Check dinghy bow and stern lines at the dock, verify chafe gear, then return to cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Tide's high enough the dock's slick. Check lines fast and get back inside.

You're going to get yourself hurt much worse than this ankle.

reach for the mint poultice, my hands shaking from the fever.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so reckless. He doesn't see the way the water is catching the hull.
