The Calm After the Storm

The rain has slowed to a steady drizzle as the air pressure holds. You and Jenny gather in the kitchen, the smell of drying mint and woodsmoke filling the room.

The humidity hangs heavy over the cottage as the cloud cover thickens overhead. Kevin works at the workbench on the Yanmar sleeve, while Jenny checks the seed trays before the evening dampness sets in.

Supply boat's confirmed for day sixty-six. Six days out.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain's easing. Good. Means I can get the sleeve test-fitted properly tomorrow without fighting humidity. Jenny's close — close enough to smell the mint on her hands. Haven't decided if I'll mention the supply boat ETA tonight or let her sleep on it.

I have enough time to finish the sketches by then.

Jenny picks up a handful of limpets and begins to scrape the grit from them with a small knife.

Six days. If the weather turns, we'll be eating nothing but salt and hope.

Six days. Weather holds, we'll be ready.

💭 peek at the thought
She's planning to stay that long, at least. The sketches — salt glands, succulents, whatever she's cataloguing — they matter to her. More than she says. Six days. Time to finish the sleeve, time to get the dinghy engine mounted if the parts hold.

🌿 Jenny09:05

I need to check the seed trays again before the humidity rises further.

Jenny opens her notebook to the page with the salt way and begins sketching the Detail of a limpet shell.

💭 peek at the thought
If the weather doesn't hold, the boat stays away and the water keeps dropping.
