Rain and Routine

Steady rain drums the cottage roof as dawn light filters through the shutters. Kevin sits at the table folding the trust's letter into a dry bag, the barometer's needle unmoving at 991 hPa. Jenny props her ankle on a cushion, salt-soak basin beside her, sketchbook open to sea beet gland density gradients.

Kevin left the cottage at first light carrying the letter to the mainland post box, while Jenny remained behind to debride her infected ankle and inspect the south slope drainage trench. The rain continued steadily as Kevin descended the path toward the dock.

Morning. Barometer holding. I'll head out at first light — walk the letter to the crossroads, check the dock ladder and shrine steps while the tide's down. Back before dark.

pack the dry bag with the letter, spare water test kit, and a tin of corned beef; check the shortwave radio is secured under the tarp; pull on boots and oilskin

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's steady. Good sign for the walk. Eight kilometres there and back — knee'll hold if I pace it. Letter's sealed, dry bag's sound. Just need to check the dock ladder and shrine steps while tide's low on the way out.

Watch the drainage on the south slope; it's choked with silt from the rain.

reaches for the salt-water basin and dips a clean cloth, wincing as the throbbing in the ankle spikes with the movement.

He thinks the boat is the only thing that needs fixing, but the infection is eating my leg from the inside out.

🔧 Kevin23:26

South slope drainage. Noted. I'll clear it on the return leg if the light holds.

set a hand on her shoulder, brief and steady; pick up the packed dry bag and the walking stick leaning by the door; step out onto the porch into the rain

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the south slope — saw the silt buildup yesterday. Ankle's still angry. She won't say stop, won't say stay. Just gives me the work that needs doing.

Don't stay out late. The tide is coming in.

presses the salt-soaked cloth to the red, angry skin of the ankle, breathing through gritted teeth to mask a groan.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in four days, I'll have to use the radio for a medivac.

🔧 Kevin23:29

Won't. Tide turns at the shrine steps — I'll be past them before it covers the lower rung.

pull the oilskin hood low; start down the path toward the dock, boots finding the worn track through wet grass

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the tide better than I am. Always does. Won't tell her the knee's stiff — she'd only worry. Eight hours there and back if I hold a steady pace. Less if I don't stop.

Jenny — watches him disappear into the grey mist, then turns back to the sketchbook, forcing her pencil to stay steady despite the fever.

💭 peek at the thought
He moves with such purpose while I'm just a decaying specimen in my own home.
