The Storm Breaks Early

The wind howls through the radio mast, rattling the shutters. The tide is now high enough to reach the lower dock pilings.

The steady rain continues to hammer the island as the water tank reaches its maximum capacity. Kevin prepares for the long trek to the crossroads while Jenny battles with a rising fever, and the barometer continues to drop.

Storm's proper now. Wind's northeast, tide's on the pilings. Dock held last blow — sistered knee, new bolts. But I'll check the tell-tales at high water if you'll be alright here alone for twenty minutes.

Set the tin mug of broth on the table beside Jenny, pull a chair close, sit down facing her.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here proper now. Wind against the shutters, tide on the pilings. Jenny's got the fever and the ankle. Letter's still in my pocket — eight kays there and back in this. Should've gone yesterday. Radio's quiet. Supply boat said four days, maybe six. Barometer's 984 and steady, but the wind tells different. Dock held last time. Sistered knee, new bolts. Need to check the tell-tales at high water like the notebook says. But Jenny's here, hurt, waiting on the broth. Forty minutes she's waited for. Said no radio, no tools. Just us.

The dock is fine, Kevin. Just don't let the salt get into the joints this time.

Jenny takes a slow sip of the broth, her eyes tracking a bead of water running down the windowpane.

He's worried about the wood, and I'm worried about the rot in my bone.

Salt gets everywhere. Greenheart sister knee's holding. Stainless bolts. Old planks still breathe though. I'll check the tell-tales at the turn.

Reach over and brush a damp strand of hair back from her forehead, fingers lingering a moment against her skin — checking the heat there.

💭 peek at the thought
She knows the dock. Knows I'll check it anyway. Salt in the joints — she's right, that's what kills the timber. The sistered knee's greenheart, bolts are stainless, but the old planks still breathe. She's watching the window, not me. Fever's still there behind the eyes. Forty minutes she asked for. I'm sitting in it.

It's just the heat. The own is still throbbing.

Jenny leans away slightly from his hand, focusing back on the sketch of the sea beet's salt glands.

💭 peek at the thought
He's checking for the fever like I'm a specimen in a petri dish.
