The Silted Trench

Kevin and Jenny stand by the base of the garden wall where water is pooling against the stones. The air is heavy and still, and the barometer continues its slow descent from 9984 hPa.

Kevin cleared the silt-choked south slope drainage trench and the shingle-blocked outlet, letting ponded water surge out before the rising tide could back-flood the garden wall. Jenny monitored the barometer, which held at 984 hPa, and moved the heirloom seed tin to the high shelf in the cottage as a precaution.

🌿 Jenny00:23

The drainage is blocked, Kevin. We need to clear the silt before the tide rises, or the garden is lost.

Jenny shifts her weight to her good leg, wincing visibly, and points to the stagnant water in the south slope trench.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is pooling too fast; if that trench isn't clear, the whole wall will undercut by morning, and my ankle is screaming from the movement.

🔧 Kevin00:23

Go sit on the porch. I'll clear it.

walk to the garden shed, grab the spade and mattock, return to the south slope trench, start digging out the silt at the lowest point where it's backing up against the wall

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The silt's thick as porridge and the tide's coming up. If that water breaches the wall, the soil goes saline and we lose the season. Her ankle's holding but she shouldn't be putting weight on it — she's favouring it hard.

🌿 Jenny00:25

Watch the way. If it drops below 982, we have to move the seed tin to the high shelf.

Jenny watches him for a moment, her hand clutching her throbing ankle, then limps toward the cottage to check the instrument.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just dirt, but the buildup is heavy with clay and salt—the pressure is building faster than he realizes.

🔧 Kevin00:25

Kevin — keep digging the trench, throwing silt uphill onto the path where it won't wash back, watching the water start to move sluggishly toward the outlet

💭 peek at the thought
982. That's the number she gave me. Barometer was 998 and falling when I looked this morning — she must've seen it drop further while I was getting tools. She's not just watching the garden. She's watching the sky.

🌿 Jenny00:27

It's moving, but the tide is coming in fast.

Jenny sits on the porch step, leaning her back against the wood, and stares at the needle of the barometer.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't clear the outlet properly, the salt water will just seep back into the trays and the sea much will rot.

🔧 Kevin00:27

Outlet's choking on shingle. Going to clear the mouth.

walk down the trench line to where it meets the beach, start pulling stones and packed gravel from the outlet with gloved hands and the mattock blade, letting the ponded water find its way out

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's pushing up the outlet. If the sea backs up into the trench faster than I can dig it down, we're just moving mud. Need to get the fall steeper, cut it deeper at the discharge end. She's watching the glass like it'll give her a different number if she stares hard enough.

🌿 Jenny00:33

The pressure is at 984 and falling. If it hits 982, the tin goes.

Jenny stands up slowly, wincing as the pain shoots through her ankle, and moves toward the kitchen to grab the seed tin from the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't get the mouth clear, the tide will push the salt back up the trench and drown the seedlings.

🔧 Kevin00:33

Kevin — keep working the outlet, widening the cut, letting the trapped water rush out in a brown surge, then turn back up the trench to deepen the run where it flattens near the garden wall

💭 peek at the thought
984. Dropping two millibars while I've been at the outlet. She's not waiting for 982 — she's moving now. Smart. The tin on the high shelf stays dry if the cottage takes water. My letter to Tom's in the dry bag on the dinghy with seed tin E and the spare impeller. That's already high. This one's Jenny's heirlooms. She knows what she's doing. Let her.
