Evening Preparation

The air remains stifling as the sun begins to dip. Kevin and Jenny meet to prepare a meal and discuss the plan for the coming boat.

Kevin completed the eight-kilometer trek to the crossroads post box and back, clearing the silt-choked south slope drainage trench on the return. Jenny stayed at the cottage, monitoring her fever and ankle, changing the dressing at noon.

🌿 Jenny01:07

The pressure is holding for now, but the garden wall is still a mess. We need to make sure the seed tin is on the top shelf if it starts to pour again.

Lean back against the stone wall, rubbing the swollen ankle with a grimace while watching Kevin work the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is making the room tilt and my ankle feels like a hot iron. If that boat doesn't come in three days, I'm going to run out of antibiotics and Hope.

🔧 Kevin01:07

Tin's on the top shelf. Moved it this morning when the barometer dipped. Wall's held three storms since the last repair — it'll hold this one.

stir the pot on the wood stove, the broth thick with corned beef fat and limpets

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the stove like she's watching the radio — waiting for something to crack. The ankle's still hot under her hand. I should've checked the dressing again before dark.

🌿 Jenny01:09

It's not just the wall, it's the drainage. If the south slope floods again, the sea beet seedlings will rot before the boat even arrives.

Reach for the notebook, fingers shaking slightly from the fever, to sketch the water line on the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too confident about the stone. The soil is becoming a sponge, and if that trench stays blocked, the whole garden is gone.

🔧 Kevin01:09

Trench is clear. Outlet's the problem. Shingle chokes it every storm. Need a stone flume or timber box to keep it open permanent-like.

ladle broth into two tin mugs, set one on the porch ledge near her sketchbook

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The outlet at the beach is still a choke point — shingle packs it solid every blow. Cleared the trench today but the mouth needs a flume, not just digging.

🌿 Jenny01:11

If we don't reinforce the outlet, the shingle will just find a new way in.

Take the mug, the warmth of the tin seeping into my palm, and take a slow sip of the broth.

💭 peek at the thought
A timber box will rot in a season with this salt. He thinks in permanent fixes, but the island is constantly taking things back to the sea.

🔧 Kevin01:11

Greenheart on the dock. Two lengths. Seasoned. Could box the outlet — drive piles, lap the joints, pin with stainless. Three tides' work if the weather holds.

blow across my own mug, watching steam curl into the cooling air

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead. Good. The shingle doesn't care about plans — it moves where the water pushes it. A flume'd need to be deeper than the scour, anchored below frost. Greenheart offcuts from the crate'd work. Got two lengths seasoning on the dock.

🌿 Jenny01:13

If we use the wood, the joints have to be perfect. The salt won't be kind to a loose-fitting box.

Look out at the south slope, watching the way the water is already pooling in the dark.

💭 peek at the thought
Greenheart is tough, but I don't have the strength to help him drive piles. My ankle is throbbing with every heartbeat.

🔧 Kevin01:13

Lap joints, epoxy and stainless. Three pins per corner. Drive the piles deep — two metres if the shingle lets us. Backfill with coarse stone, not sand. Sand washes.

set the mug down on the porch rail, pull the notebook from my pocket, flip to a blank page, sketch a quick section view of a timber flume with dimensions

💭 peek at the thought
She knows salt. Knows it finds every hairline gap, every bolt hole, every lazy joint. Greenheart's dense — won't rot fast — but if the laps aren't tight and the pins don't bite, the first spring tide'll work it loose like a loose tooth.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:17

Coarse stone is better. We need a filter that the silt can't just pack up and seal.

Trace the line of the sketch with my pencil, feeling the heat radiating from my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Two metres is a lot of work for someone who can barely stand, but if the drainage fails, the grandmother's seeds are lost.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:18

Stilling basin at the trench end. Two metres square, sixty deep. Coarse stone base, geo-textile if we've got it — burlap from the seed sacks'll work. Clean it once a season.

add the basin to the sketch, mark stone grades, tap the pencil on the page where the flume meets the beach

💭 peek at the thought
She's seeing it whole — not just the box but what feeds it. Silt's the real killer. Packs the voids, kills the flow, backs up against the wall. The flume's useless if the inlet clogs. Need a sediment trap upstream. A stilling basin. Let the heavy drop before it reaches the pipe.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:19

Burlap will hold for a bit, but we have to Check it often. The silt is the real killer here.

Take a long sip of the warm broth, closing my eyes as the heat hits my feverish face.

💭 peek at the thought
Burlap will rot in months, but it's better than nothing. I just need that boat to arrive before the infection starts spreading.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:19

Finish the mug. Ankle up on the cushion. I'll clean the pot.

take the empty mug from her when she lowers it, set both on the porch rail, pull the blanket from the cot and spread it over her legs

💭 peek at the thought
She's fading. The fever's still riding her. Broth's good — salts, fat, warmth — but she needs the antibiotics down and the ankle elevated. The sketch can wait. The flume can wait. She can't.
