The rising tide and the overflow

The rain does not slacken, and the barometer continues its slow descent as the sea laps closer to the south slope drainage.

The rain has shifted to a heavy downpour from the west, lashing the cottage and turning the south slope. The tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools and the sandbars near the dock. The air pressure is rising, suggesting the storm front is passing despite the current intensity.

🌿 Jenny00:45

The tide is rising too fast for the trench.

Tighten the ankle brace, move the seed tin to the highest shelf, and sketch the erosion pattern on the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pressure hits 980 hPa, the surge will bypass the stone lining entirely. The garden is too vulnerable to the salt-spray right now, and I can't let Grandmother's seeds rot because I couldn't clear the trench fast enough. I'm documenting the decline of this island while my body fails to keep up.

Overflow pipe first. Then I'll sandbag the garden wall base.

grab the copper spillway hose and timber strips from the porch, head to the back wall where the tank overflow pours onto the foundation

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the trench won't take it with the tide this high. The water's already backing up against the wall foundation. Need to get the overflow pipe extended clear of the cottage before the footings saturate.

🌿 Jenny00:49

Watch the pressure on those bags; the water is already carving channels through the silt.

Limp to the kitchen to check the barometer one last time and prepare a stronger poultice for the swelling.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't three that flow, the foundation will undercut the entire south slope by nightfall. My ankle is screaming with every step he takes, and the fever is starting to blur the edges of my sketches.

Got it. Extending the spillway past the garden wall footings.

run the copper pipe and hose extension from the tank overflow, stake it with bamboo down the slope past the garden wall onto the grass, let gravity take it clear of the foundation

💭 peek at the thought
She's seeing what I'm seeing — the water's not just rising, it's cutting. Silt doesn't hold. If the bags blow out, the wall goes. Need the hose past the drip line, staked solid.

🌿 Jenny00:51

Make sure the end is anchored deep; the surge will rip that hose right out of the mud.

Check the barometer, wrap the ankle in the mint poultice, and lie back on the cot to watch the pressure drop.

💭 peek at the thought
If that spillway doesn't hold, the whole south slope will slide from under the cottage. My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain, and I can't see the lines on the paper.

🔧 Kevin00:51

Pulling oak stakes from the shade cloth to anchor the hose end.

walk to the garden, pull two oak stakes from the shade cloth corners, carry them back, drive them deep over the hose terminus on the grass slope, lash the hose down tight with heavy-duty twine

💭 peek at the thought
She's right again. Mud won't hold bamboo stakes against a surge. Need dead weight or driven stakes. Got oak stakes at the shade cloth corners — can pull two.

🌿 Jenny00:53

The pressure's at 985 hPa. If it drops further, we need to move the seed tin to the upper

💭 peek at the thought
If those stakes pull out, the garden wall is gone and the seeds with it. way head is a heavy weight, and the ankle is a pulse of fire under the damp cloth.

🔧 Kevin00:53

It's already on the high shelf. You moved it this morning. Sleep now.

pull the blanket up over her shoulders, set the cold damp cloth back on her forehead, sit on the stool beside the cot and watch the barometer

💭 peek at the thought
She's fading. The fever's pulling her under. Barometer at 985 and still dropping — she's tracked it true. Seed tin's already on the high shelf from earlier. She missed that while she was out at the wall. I'll tell her when she wakes. Right now she needs rest and the ankle held cool.

🌿 Jenny00:55

Check the radio when the tide turns.

Close my eyes and listen to the rain hitting the stone, trying to map the garden in my head.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks I've forgotten, but I remember every inch of that water rising. If the pressure hits 982, the tin is the only thing left of my work.

🔧 Kevin00:55

Kevin — walk to the radio shelf, power on the shortwave, set to channel 16, listen through the static for the supply boat or any traffic

💭 peek at the thought
She's asleep. Breathing slow and even. The poultice is holding the heat down. Barometer at 985 and the tide turning — that's the window. Radio check on 16, then the supply boat frequency. If the pressure holds through the turn, we ride it. If it drops another millibar, I batten the shutters and the generator.
