Midday Heat Shift

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the wind begins to pick up from the east.

The rain continues its steady persistence, drumming against the cottage roof as the air pressure drops sharply to 979 hPa. The water tank has finally reached its 400-litre capacity, and the tide is receding rapidly, exposing the slick rocks of the southern flats. The atmosphere is heavy with the sense of an approaching squall.

The wind is turning. Did the boat get through on the radio?

Closes the notebook and winces, shifting weight away from her left ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if the boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'm stuck with this leg for weeks.

Nothing since the coast guard. They diverted her. No new ETA.

Walk to the radio shelf, flip the power switch, and key the mic on Channel 16. "Sorrel Island calling supply vessel, over."

💭 peek at the thought
Radio's been quiet on 16 since the coast guard said the boat diverted. Barometer's still dropping — 979 now. She doesn't need me to sugarcoat it.

So we're on our own for another few days.

Runs a hand over the tin of seeds on the table, her fingers tracing the rusted lid.

💭 peek at the thought
Diverted? The rain is already getting worse and my ankle is throbbing like a heart.

Three days minimum. Maybe five if the swell hangs.

Set the mic back in its cradle, radio still scanning. Pull out the chair opposite her and sit, knees cracking. "Water's full. Wood's stacked. Engine's solid. We've got time."

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking. She's telling. And she's right — three days at least if this front holds. The seed tin's got her attention but her ankle's the real limit.

🌿 Jenny03:11

Time doesn't help the garden grow if I can't walk to the clearing.

Looks at the half-weeded patch through the window, then back at her swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
Time is the one thing I don't have if this infection starts spreading.

I'll do the rows. You tell me what goes where.

Stand, stretch the stiffness from the cross-country run. "Tomatoes first — they're showing salt stress on the lower leaves. Basil's half gone. Peppers holding. Lettuce you'll have to call." Walk to the porch door, pull on boots.

💭 peek at the thought
She's been carrying the garden in her head for eleven months. The ankle's not just an ankle — it's the difference between the life she pictured and the one we're living.
