Night at the Shrine

The rain has mellowed to a drizzle as the tide begins to turn. You and Jenny huddle near the fire, assessing the progress made on the boat repairs.

Kevin and Jenny rest at the old shrine as the clouds thicken under the dry season heat. The epoxy on the spruce spar patch remains tacky despite the heat, and they wait for the supply boat in nine days.

It'll cure in the morning if the air dries out.

Tighten the bandage on my ankle and lean back toward the fire.

💭 peek at the thought
The epoxy is still tacky; the humidity is the real enemy tonight. He's looking at me with that look again, like I'm made of glass.

Morning sun'll do it. You did good on the wrap.

Shift closer to the fire, extending my hands toward the warmth, and glance at the spruce spar leaning against the cottage wall where the last coat catches the firelight.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the epoxy. Morning sun on the spar usually does what heat and patience can't. My ankle's holding — her work, not mine.

Just don't touch it. Let it set.

Reach for the tin of seeds in my pocket and rub the metal with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focusing on the spar. He always focuses on the things he can fix with a wrench or a chemical.

Not touching it. You've got the season mapped out already?

Rest my forearms on my knees, watching the fire rather than the tin in her hand, and let the silence sit between us without filling it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's steady. Steadier than me. The tin's still warm from her pocket — heirloom tomato, pepper, the sea beet envelope. She's already planting next season in her head.
