EVENING APPROACH

The rain begins to slack slightly as the light fades, and the tide reaches its lowest point, leaving the reef pools exposed to the air.

The tide has receded, exposing the slick expanse of kelp and barnacled rock. The air remains heavy with humidity, keeping the epoxy on the spruce spar tacky and slow curing. Jenny rests her ankle, the poultice cooling her skin, while Kevin prepares to head to the reef before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny05:53

The water is low. I'll check the pools tomorrow if the weather holds.

Apply the sea beet-mint-honey poultice to the ankle and wrap it in a clean cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is out far enough to see the spine of the island, but my ankle won't let me go out.

🔧 Kevin05:54

First light. I'll walk the reef and bring it in. You rest the ankle.

walk to the dock and check the dinghy lines one last time before dark

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's out far enough the reef's bare. Good. Means I can walk to the crate at first light without swimming. Ankle's holding — poultice working. She's steady.

🌿 Jenny05:54

I'm fine, Kevin. Just stay sharp on those lines.

Limp over to the table and open the notebook to the north ridge page.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks 'rest' means doing nothing. I can't just sit here while the light is actually usable.

🔧 Kevin05:56

Lines are good. Double-sprung on the bow, chafe guard on the stern. She'll hold.

pour the last of the coffee into a tin mug and set it on the table beside her notebook

💭 peek at the thought
She's not fine. But she'll not hear it from me tonight. Lines are sound. Crate waits. Morning's the window.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:56

Thanks.

Take a sip of the coffee and begin sketching the contour lines of the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be gentle. It's almost worse than when he's barking orders.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin05:58

Kevin — sit on the bench opposite her, pull the Yanmar log from my pocket, and start copying the vibration readings onto a clean page

💭 peek at the thought
She maps what she sees. I fix what breaks. Different languages, same island. The coffee's hot. She'll draw till the light fails.

🌿 Jenny05:58

Jenny — make sketch: North Ridge Topography - Initial Survey

💭 peek at the thought
He's so obsessed with the machine. The engine is fine; it's the soil and the salt that are actually failing us.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin06:00

That the saddle contour?

tap the log page with the pen, marking the half-throttle RPM where the vibration settled after the sleeve install

💭 peek at the thought
Pencil on paper. She's getting the ridge right — the saddle at 40m, the basalt outcrop, the way the Carex thins above the salt line. Good eyes. Better hands.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:00

Yes. It's the narrowest point before the plateau.

Point to the saddle on the sketch with a pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually looking at the map. Most people just see a squiggle; he sees a shape.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin06:02

Wind cuts across there. Salt rides it. That's your line.

set the pen down and watch her hand move across the page, finishing the last contour line

💭 peek at the thought
Narrowest point. Wind funnels there. Salt spray rides the gusts. That's where the Carex dies out. She sees it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny06:03

Exactly. That's why the distribution is so skewed.

Add a series of stippled marks to the windward slope to indicate salt-burn zones.

💭 peek at the thought
He's not wrong about the salt spray. It's exactly why the Carex is stunted on the windward side.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin06:04

You'll want to walk it.

reach for the mug, wrap cold fingers around the tin, and drink the last swallow of coffee

💭 peek at the thought
She reads the land like I read an engine. Vibration, heat, the thing that isn't quite right. The stippling's precise. Salt-burn zones mapped. Tomorrow she'll want to ground-truth it. Ankle permitting.
