Night of the Storm
The rain has not slowed, and the barometer continues to drop. They sit together in the flickering light, the smell of the poultice strong as the wind howls.
The air is heavy and still, the dry season heat pressing down as the cloud cover thickens over the island. Inside the cottage, the smell of antiseptic and sea herbs lingers while Jenny rests with her leg elevated, the fresh sea beet poultice cooling the throbbing ankle. The Yanmar engine sits silent, its high-pitched whine still a ghostly mental reminder of the scored housing that awaits attention.
Barometer's 992. Wind's backed southwest, steady twenty gusting thirty. Shrine held on the north face — lime mortar's better than cement in salt air.
Check Jenny's ankle dressing, rotate the cold pack, and note the red streak progression against the ballpoint marks from this morning.

Streaks moved up two centimetres since 0600. Fever's holding. Not dropping.
Re-wet the cloth with boiled rainwater, swap the warming pack for the cold one from the basin, and re-wrap the gauze without pulling the incision edges.

Radio's on. Channel 16 monitored. I'll call at 2000 if the boat hasn't raised us.
Turn the shortwave volume up one notch, set the squelch, and sit on the edge of the cot within reach of the handset.

Don't call yet. Just stay.
Pull the blanket up, shivering, watching the red line pulse against the skin.
