The Weight of Pressure

Kevin sits on the porch step watching the flat sky clouds thicken over the garden. Jenny lies on the cot inside, her ankle elevated on pillows while the fever makes her lethargic. The barometer shows a steady drop as the air grows heavy.

The morning air is heavy and humid, the pressure continuing its steady decline as the tide retreats. Inside the cottage, the heat of fever is thick, and the infection in Jenny's ankle remains a pressing, spreading concern while the thickening cloud cover signals a change in weather long before the supply boat arrives.

(quiet, to himself) Four days.

Walk inside to the bedroom, press the back of his hand to Jenny's forehead, then move to the kitchen to check the antibiotic blister packs on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
She's burning through the last of the doxycycline. Metronidazole's done. If the streaks don't recede by noon, I'm out of antibiotics and out of time. The supply boat's four days out if the weather holds — but this pressure drop says it won't.

🌿 Jenny09:23

Is the... is the boat coming?

Reach for the water glass on the nightstand, wincing as the movement jars the ankle, and take a small, shallow sip.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is spiking again; I can feel the heatradi off my skin. If those streaks don't stop before the boat comes, the seeds won't matter.

Got through on sixteen at first light. Captain heard me. Eighteen hours if the sea lets him.

Set the water glass back on the nightstand, pull the wool blanket up to her shoulders, then move to the porch to check the barometer again.

💭 peek at the thought
Her voice is paper-thin. The fever's taken the fight out of her for now. She's asking about the boat because she knows the numbers — four days of food if we stretch, four days of antibiotics if we don't, and the barometer says the sea won't let anyone land in three.

🌿 Jenny09:25

Tell him... thanks.

Close my eyes and try to focus on the pulse in my leg rather than the shivering.

💭 peek at the thought
Eighteen hours. That's a lifetime when the infection is moving this fast. I need to stay awake to watch the streaks.

🔧 Kevin09:26

Rest. I'll wake you for the next dose.

Wet a clean cloth in the basin of cool water, wring it out, and lay it across her forehead and wrists; then step to the kitchen to fill a mug with water from the tank and set it on the stove to warm for oral rehydration.

💭 peek at the thought
She's thanking a man she's never met for a boat that might not make it through what's building. The shivering's new — rigors mean the bacteria are showering into her bloodstream. I've got four hours until the next dose window. Need to cool her down and get fluids in before then.

🌿 Jenny09:27

Don't... let me sleep through.

Reach out a trembling hand, tracing the edge of the red line on my calf to see how far it moved since dawn.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is cold, but my skin feels like a furnace. If I fall asleep, I won't know if the red reaches my knee.

🔧 Kevin09:28

I won't. Show me.

Crouch beside the cot, take the ballpoint pen from the shelf, and carefully mark the current leading edge of the red streaks on her calf and thigh with dated lines; then pull the blanket back down and sit on the edge of the cot to wait out

💭 peek at the thought
The streaks were at her knee at 0300. If they've crossed the joint into the thigh, we're past cellulitis and into sepsis territory. No IV. No evac. Just oral drugs losing the race. She's mapping her own dying like she maps the sea beet transects — precise, documented, unafraid. I need to measure. Mark. Know exactly what we're fighting.

🌿 Jenny09:29

It's moving. Faster than yesterday.

Grip the edge of the mattress, my knuckles white, as a wave of nausea rolls through the fever.

💭 peek at the thought
It's higher. The mark I made at dawn is inches away. If it hits the joint, I can't walk to the boat.
