← Day 610

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the keeper's cottage

Midday check and adapter decision

Kevin stands at the dock beside the machined bronze adapter, wiping grease from his hands. Jenny sits on the cottage bed with her notebook open, the latest sketch showing angry red lines marching up her calf.

The midday heat is heavy and still as the barometer continues to drop to 997 hPa. Jenny's ankle is throbbing with a persistent fever and red streaks are moving slowly up the leg, though the sea beet poultice is working to draw out heat. At the dock, the Yanmar engine continues to emit a high-pitched whine despite the new impeller, the scored pump housing likely the culprit.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You hold the bronze adapter up to the light, turning it slow. The threads are clean, the flange face true. Yanmar gearbox waits on the dinghy transom, bolt holes aligned. Decision time: install it now or verify shaft alignment one more time with the dial indicator.

🔧 Kevin09:38

Kevin — walk to the workshop, pick up the dial indicator, return to the dinghy and check prop shaft runout one more time before installing the bronze adapter.

💭 peek at the thought
The adapter's good. Machined true, threads clean, face flat. One more check won't hurt but the Perkins is scrap and the Yanmar's the only way off this rock if the supply boat doesn't show. Dial indicator's in the workshop. Ten minutes either way.

🔧 Kevin09:42

Kevin — install the bronze adapter onto the Yanmar gearbox flange, torque the bolts to spec, then fire up the engine and listen to the raw water pump at idle.

💭 peek at the thought
Dial indicator reads zero. Shaft's true. Adapter slides home clean. Now bolt it, torque to spec, and see if the whine's gone or if the pump housing bore is still singing its same old song.

🔧 Kevin09:46

Kevin — shut down the Yanmar. Pull the raw water pump housing off, inspect the bore damage close, and measure the scoring depth with the feeler gauges.

💭 peek at the thought
Engine caught first crank. Raw water pump whines like a banshee — same note, same pitch. Housing bore is scored deep. Impeller's new, seating fine, but the bore's eaten. No fixing that without a lathe and bronze stock thick enough to sleeve it. Perkins block is cracked. We're down to jury-rig options: find a used housing somewhere, machine a sleeve for this one, or run it dry and pray. None are good.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the keeper's cottage

You press the back of your hand to your forehead — still burning. The notebook lies open beside you, two sketches now: breakfast and midday. The red line has moved. Metronidazole dose taken, poultice fresh. Next check in two hours. You reach for the water mug with fingers that don't quite steady.

🌿 Jenny09:37

way still, Jenny. way stay.

Take a slow sip of water and close eyes, trying to ignore the thro in the leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The red is moving faster than the antibiotics. If it hits the knee before the boat, the seeds will never see the soil.

🌿 Jenny09:41

(not yet)

Peel back the bandage to check the edge of the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is a heavy blanket now. I can feel the pulse in the red streaks.

🌿 Jenny09:45

God, stay still.

Trace the leading point of the redness with a pen to mark the progress.

💭 peek at the thought
It's hot to the touch. The streaks are definitely closer to the knee than morning.
