Night watch and radio schedule

Night has fallen clear and windless. The trade wind holds steady. Kevin sits at the radio with the 2000 hours Channel 16 call coming due. Jenny lies on the cot, the ankle elevated on a rolled blanket, the notebook closed beside her. The barometer reads 1006 hPa and falling. The generator hums low in its shed. The supply boat is due in two days — if it comes.

The air in the cottage is heavy with the scent of sea beet and antiseptic. The barometer needle continues its slow, steady descent, while Jenny lies on the cot, her breathing shallow as the fever battles the infection. Kevin watches the radio, the silence from the shortwave frequencies feeling more oppressive than the de-humid pressure of the approaching storm.

🌿 Jenny13:07

(whispering) Kevin, check the radio again for me?

Press the damp cloth to my forehead and breathe through the throbbing in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The streaks are still moving. If they reach the knee, I won't be able to walk to the garden.

Hour early. But I'll call now if it settles you.

walk to the radio shelf, switch on the shortwave, set to Channel 16, key the mic

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking me to call early. The 2000 check isn't due for another hour, but the fever's got her awake and the silence from the last three scheduled calls sits heavy. She knows the boat's due in two days — if it comes. She's asking for reassurance I can't give.

way... just tell them we're still here.

Close my eyes and listen for the static, praying for a voice from the mainland.

💭 peek at the thought
His voice is too loud in the quiet. It makes my head throb.

Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island, Sorrel Island. This is Keeper Kevin on Channel 1-six. Position 43-12 South, 147-08 East. Two souls aboard. Medical situation ongoing. Requesting supply boat ETA confirmation. Over.

release the mic, wait through the static, watch the barometer needle at 1006 falling

💭 peek at the thought
She's not asking for weather or ETA. Just wants someone to know we haven't slipped under. The mic's cold in my hand. I've made this call a hundred times — position, status, souls aboard. Never feels like enough.

🌿 Jenny13:11

(weakly) Two days is too long for this fever.

Reach for the water glass, flinching as the heat radiates from my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If they don't come in two days, the seeds won't matter. Neither will.

🔧 Kevin13:12

Boat's due in two days if it comes. If not — we do what we've done. Next dose in four hours. You need water now.

pour water from the kettle into the tin mug, let it cool a moment, bring it to her cot

💭 peek at the thought
Static. Nothing. Same as 0800, 1200, 1600. The French trawler at 1400 was the last voice we heard, and they're three hundred miles west. Coast guard said diverted two days ago, no ETA. She's right — two days with sepsis tracking to the groin and the last antibiotics gone. I should've pushed harder on the medevac forms. Should've keyed the Mayday when the streaks hit the knee.

🌿 Jenny13:13

Don't leave the radio.

Take a small sip, my hand shaking against the metal.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is cool, but my skin is fire. I can feel the infection moving own my hip.
