Midday Mayday and Crate Inventory

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage porch. The barometer reads 1002 hPa and falling. Kevin has just finished the 1200 Mayday relay on shortwave. Jenny spreads the crate inventory list on the table — six tins corned beef, one coil new rope, one jar coffee. The supply boat is due tomorrow. The storm is arriving early.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

The barometer is bottoming out. We need to secure the dinghy now, not tomorrow.

Trace the line on the barometer with a trembling finger, then rub the pulsing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If that boat doesn't show before the wind hits, I'm stuck here with a rotting leg.

Warps are doubled. Bow line's got slack for swell. Stern spring's new rope, half-inch three-strand from the crate. Second spring's the old heavy weather line, doubled around mooring ring and north piling. But the mooring ring mortise is splintered — oak wedges are holding, barely.

Walk to the porch rail, scan the dock and dinghy, check line angles and chafe points.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The barometer's dropped another hPa since 0800. Wind'll shift southwest by evening, fetch building across open water. Dinghy's only got the bow line and one stern spring holding — not enough for what's coming.

The ring's held three storms already, but each one takes more. We need to sister that mortise before dark. The ring's held three storms already, but each one takes more. We need to sister that mortise before dark.

Retrieve the copper-nickel splice from the rope bag and check the chafe points where the new rope bites into the splintered wood. </think>THOUGHT: Splintered mortise means the ring will fail if that swell hits.

Splintered mortise means the ring will fail if that swell hits. I should have reinforced it last week when I had the greenheart planks.

Greenheart offcuts stacked on the dock. Four 150mm stainless through-bolts with nylocs. Epoxy tub's near empty but residue'll seal the bolt holes. Low tide's in ninety minutes. We sister the mortise then, before the swell builds.

Turn back inside, pull the 19mm wrench, the 10mm auger bit, and the mallet from the tool shelf. Set them on the porch rail ready.

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the same thing I have. The oak wedges are vertical grain, driven deep, but the mortise walls are rotted pine — each surge works them looser. Sistering it with greenheart offcuts and through-bolts is the only way. We have the timber, the bolts, the epoxy residue. Need to do it at low tide when the ring's accessible. Tide's rising now. Window's narrow.

Ninety minutes. I'll get the poultice ready; I won't be moving fast later.

Pack the sea beet leaves and honey into a clean bowl while waiting for the tide to turn.

💭 peek at the thought
If the ring goes, the dinghy goes, and I'm stranded on this rock with a rotting leg and a tin of seeds.
