Evening at the standing stones

They walk the ridge path together as the trade wind freshens, the trust letter in Jenny's pocket and the carved softwood scrap in Kevin's. The shrine stones stand in a ring on the windward ridge, salt-crusted and silent. Light fails fast this time of year.

Kevin and Jenny descend from the ridge as the heavy air thickens, the moon already climbing high over the grey horizon. Jenny leans heavily on the driftwood cane, her breath hitching with every step, while Kevin keeps a steady eye on the stone markers to guide them back through the fading light.

🌿 Jenny16:13

We need to get back before the light loses the trail completely.

Lean heavily on the driftwood cane, shifting weight to avoid the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is coming back, I can feel the pulse in my shin like a drummer.

🔧 Kevin16:13

Trail's fine. Moon's up in twenty minutes.

walk the ridge path toward the cottage, matching her pace, the softwood scrap warm in my pocket

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's picking up. She's favouring the ankle more than she was an hour ago. Should've turned back at the lighthouse.

🌿 Jenny16:15

Just... keep moving. I'm fine.

Wipe sweat from my brow with the back of a hand and stare at the grey horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
Twenty minutes is an eternity when your leg feels like lead.

🔧 Kevin16:15

Right.

walk the ridge path toward the cottage, stride shortened to hers, one hand free at my side ready if she stumbles

💭 peek at the thought
She's not fine. The fever's back in her face. Ankle's hot through the bandage. But she'll walk before she'll let me carry her.

🌿 Jenny16:25

The moon's higher than you think. Keep an eye on the ridge markers. The moon's higher than you think. Keep an eye on the ridge markers.

Press the carved scrap against my thigh for warmth, one arm across my chest to keep the cane steady. </think>THOUGHT: The moon's higher than you think.

💭 peek at the thought
The sandpaper texture of the softwood scrap against my palm reminds me I'm still here, still making marks.

🔧 Kevin16:26

Markers are clear. Three cairns to the spring turn, then the path drops.

walk the ridge path toward the cottage, steady beside her, the carved softwood scrap pressing cold through my trousers where she tucked it against me

💭 peek at the thought
She's leaning harder. The scrap's cold against my leg — she's been carrying it all the way from the shrine. Moon's a thin coin above the cliffs, bright enough to pick out the cairns if the cloud holds.

🌿 Jenny16:27

I see them. Don't stop yet.

Lean my weight into the driftwood cane, watching the first stars bleed through the grey.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat in my ankle is pulsing in time with the heavy air.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:28

Not stopping.

walk the ridge path toward the cottage, boots finding the worn track between tussocks, the first cairn a darker shape against the sky ahead

💭 peek at the thought
Stars coming out means the cloud's lifting. Temperature's going to drop fast. Her ankle won't like the cold. Cottage is twenty minutes if we keep this rhythm.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:29

way to the first stone.

Grip the handle of the cane until my Analysis turn white, focusing on the rhythm of my breath.

💭 peek at the thought
If I fall, I'm not getting back up today.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:30

First cairn coming up. Good rhythm.

walk the ridge path toward the cottage, pace even, the first stone marker looming closer in the starlight

💭 peek at the thought
Her knuckles white on the cane. Breath ragged. The first cairn's close — maybe two hundred metres. She's counting steps. I'll match her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:31

way there.

wipe a bead of sweat from my temple, eyes fixed on the silhouette of the first stone.

💭 peek at the thought
My head is spinning, but the stones are still there.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:32

Nearly there.

walk the ridge path toward the cottage, close enough now that my shoulder nearly brushes hers, the first cairn a pale bulk against the stars

💭 peek at the thought
She's burning up again. Sweat in this cold. The infection's not done with her. First cairn's thirty metres out. I'll put a hand on her shoulder when we reach it — steady her without making it look like help.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny16:33

Just a little further.

lean heavily on the cane, feeling the grit of the path under my boots.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is a hum that won't stop.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin16:34

Cairn in ten. Hand me your pack when we get there.

walk the ridge path toward the cottage, reaching back to take the pack strap from her shoulder as we reach the first cairn, the stone cold and pale under my palm

💭 peek at the thought
Ten metres to the cairn. Her boot placement's getting sloppy — toes catching the tussocks. The ankle's giving out. I'll take her pack when we stop at the stone.
