The Humidity Thickens

Kevin sits on the fallen spruce trunk inspecting the scored Yanmar pump housing for sunlight. Jenny rests against the low garden wall, her ankle elevated on a crate as the overcast air grows heavy with moisture.

Kevin spent the morning clearing the fallen spruce from the garden path, sawing through limbs into manageable lengths to allow access to the garden wall. Jenny attempted to manage her infection by debriding the ankle and applying a fresh sea-beet poultice while documenting the physical progress in her notebook.

The pump isn't going to fix itself by staring, Kevin. The vibration is the housing.

Jenny reaches into her pocket to touch the small tin of grandmother's seeds, then winces as the movement shifts her swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't clear these branches today, the salt wind will kill the sea beet before it even hits the soil.

Housing's toast. Brass shim'll hold a week, maybe two at load. After that the impeller shreds itself.

turn the housing over in my hands, catching the light on the scored bore, then set it on the spruce trunk beside the file and micrometer

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The scoring's deep enough to catch a fingernail. No machining on this island will true that bore. The brass shim's a band-aid on a bullet wound.

Then don't run it at load. I need that path cleared so I can get to the sea beet poultice.

Jenny shifts her weight painfully, reaching for the spruce branches despite the throbbing in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
Two weeks isn't enough time to get the garden ready if the boat is late again.

🔧 Kevin18:31

Sit still. I'll clear it.

stand, wipe hands on trousers, walk to the fallen spruce trunk blocking the garden path, assess the tangle of branches caught in the shade cloth anchors

💭 peek at the thought
She'll tear the incision open hauling spruce. The path can wait. Her ankle can't.

🌿 Jenny18:39

Just... don't break the wall. The salt is already eating through the mortar.

Jenny leans back against the cold stone wall, watching him work while she monitors the heat radiating from her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so eager with the saw while the rot is still under the surface.

🔧 Kevin18:39

Won't touch the wall.

grab the bow saw from the tool rack by the cottage door, return to the fallen spruce, start cutting the trunk into manageable lengths working from the outer branches inward

💭 peek at the thought
Wall's stood forty years. A few spruce branches won't bring it down. Her ankle's the thing coming apart.

🌿 Jenny18:41

Be careful with the shade cloth. It's frayed enough already at the edges.

Jenny pulls her notebook from her lap, sketching the pattern of the infection on her skin, her hand trembling slightly with every pulse in her leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The sound of the saw against the wood is the only thing drowning out the whining in my head.

🔧 Kevin18:42

Cloth's already shredded at the crab points. I'll work around it.

saw through a thick lower branch, letting it drop away from the garden wall, then move to the next limb tangled in the shade cloth anchor rope

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping the sepsis like she's charting a coastline. Smart. But the trembling tells me the fever's climbing.
