A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin and Jenny drank coffee on the porch as the tide receded from the dock. Kevin headed into the garden to clear fallen spruce limbs with a crowbar, while Jenny stayed on the steps watching him and managing her swollen ankle.

Coffee's on if you want a mug. Water tank's full, 400 litres.

walk onto the porch and set the kettle on the wood stove

💭 peek at the thought
The cottage porch feels different after the dock work — quieter, like the island's holding its breath. Jenny's on the porch with her ankle propped, the cold pack warming beside her. The Yanmar whine's still in my head, that scored bore singing at idle. Eight days to the supply boat if it shows. The bronze sleeve's machined and ready but the housing itself is the problem. No spare. Might have to machine a brass shim from strapping like the old trick, but it fatigues fast. Need to check the rat trap too — heard scratching in the pantry last night.

Thanks. I'll take one.

Jenny shifts her weight on the porch, wincing as the movement pulls against the swollen skin of her ankle.

He's trying to be helpful, but coffee won't stop the throbbing in my leg.

🔧 Kevin20:23

Kevin — pour two tin mugs of coffee, set one on the porch rail beside her without a word, and sit on the step with my own mug, watching the tide fall

💭 peek at the thought
She's hiding how bad it is. The wince she can't quite swallow, the way she breathes through it. Red tracking up the calf past the poultice margins this morning. Heat radiating at two inches. She won't ask for help and I won't offer it in words — just do what needs doing.

Jenny takes the mug, blowing on the steam before bringing it to her lips, then reaches slowly into her pocket to pull out the seed tin. </think>THOUGHT: The salt air is getting into my lungs, making everything taste metallic. Jenny takes th

Kevin — sip the hot mug, letting the warmth spread through my hands, eyes on the tide line receding at the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's got the seed tin out. Grandmother's tin — damp but viable seeds she keeps in her pocket. She's been guarding it like it's the last thing that matters. The coffee's mostly chicory and wishful thinking but she drinks it anyway. Her ankle's throbbing under the blanket, I can see the pulse in the swelling from here.

Seven days until the boat.

Jenny traces the rusted edge of grandmother's seed tin with her thumb, looking out at the weeds in the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
It's so quiet today, just the water and the唸 in my leg.

Boat comes when it comes.

stand and walk to the garden path, crowbar in hand, starting to lever the fallen spruce limbs clear

💭 peek at the thought
Seven days. She's counting. The garden's still half weeds behind the cottage — the sensory garden I talked about for eleven months and never built. She knows. I know. The supply boat's missed three of the last five runs. The barometer's steady at 1011 but the wind's shifting northwest. Eight days of antibiotics if the infection spreads. Eight days of her not saying how bad.

🌿 Jenny20:39

Right.

Jenny takes a slow sip of the coffee, her eyes tracking the movement of the crowbar against the grey sky.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks clearing the path will fix the rot in the wood.

🔧 Kevin20:39

Kevin — lever the first heavy limb free, haul it toward the woodpile, and set the crowbar against the next branch

💭 peek at the thought
The spruce trunk's thick at the base, branches tangled in the shade cloth anchors. Good firewood if I can get it cut and stacked before the next blow. The shade cloth's already shredded at two corners from the coconut crab — needs repair before storm season. She's watching me work instead of the garden. Easier than looking at the weeds.

🌿 Jenny20:43

Watch your back.

Jenny leans back against the stone wall of the cottage, the warm mug held between both hands as she watches him.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's moving. I should be checking the pump.
