The Rising Heat

Kevin sits on the porch steps watching the flat cloud cover thicken over the ridge. Jenny reclines in a chair, her ankle propped on a stack of blankets while she watches him. The air is heavy and smells of salt and rain.

The clouds thicken over the island as the humidity rises, heavy with the coming wet season. Kevin monitors the barometer while Jenny rests her swollen ankle, both preparing for the supply boat arrival in two days.

🌿 Jenny01:21

The pressure is dropping, Kevin. Stop counting the clouds.

Reach for the sketchbook and pencil, tracing the coordinates in the margin of the page.

💭 peek at the thought
If he looks at that barometer one more time, I'm going to throw it into the surf.

Not counting. Listening.

glance at the barometer on the porch post, then pick up the shortwave handset and adjust the squelch knob

💭 peek at the thought
She caught me. Barometer's at 1008 and steady, but the air feels heavy — that metallic taste before a front. She's right. I'm stalling.

🌿 Jenny01:23

There's nothing on that frequency but static and the storm coming.

Tighten the blankets around my ankle, wincing as a sharp heat shoots through the fabric.

💭 peek at the thought
He's listening to ghosts while the fever is eating my leg.

🔧 Kevin01:23

Frequency's clear. That's the problem.

set the handset down, reach for the medical kit and clean gauze to check her ankle

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the static. She's right about the storm. The wince she's hiding tells me the poultice needs changing — or the antibiotics aren't holding. Or both.

🌿 Jenny01:25

Don't touch it yet. It's throbbing.

Pull my leg back slightly, eyes fixed on his hands.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the silence is the enemy, but the silence is the blood.

🔧 Kevin01:25

Right. Coffee first.

turn toward the kitchen door, pause to tap the barometer glass with a fingertip

💭 peek at the thought
She's protecting it. Or protecting me from seeing it worse. Either way, "yet" means she'll let me in a minute. The throb means blood moving — could be healing, could be spreading. I'll wait. But not long.
